The Foxes held a half-time lead courtesy of Alisha Lehmann’s first goal for the Club, but Anna Patten and Kirsty Hanson ensured it would be the visitors claiming all three points on Filbert Way.
It leaves us bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League standings with five games to go, starting with another home fixture this time next week, against Brighton & Hove Albion (3pm GMT kick-off).
First half battles
Three changes were made to the side that lost out to Liverpool last weekend, with Chantelle Swaby, Emma Jansson and Missy Goodwin all drafted into the XI, replacing Olivia McLoughlin and Rachel Williams, who dropped to the bench, while Sarah Mayling was ineligible to face her parent club.
Captain Sam Tierney, making her 150th LCFC Women appearance, had our first shot of the afternoon, cleanly striking a central free-kick which had the necessary power but not the direction to trouble Ellie Roebuck in the Villa goal. Tierney would call the England international into action on the half hour mark, but the ‘keeper claimed her rising effort.
Janina Leitzig, meanwhile, had little to do herself, other than dealing with several corners which came her way, owing to a brave, sliding block from Julie Thibaud to prevent Noelle Maritz’s shot from testing the German.
Trading goals
Hanson, the Villans’ top scorer in the WSL this term, produced an opening, rounding Leitzig but only finding the side netting from a tight angle - and Natalia Arroyo’s side would soon rue that miss, with the opener arriving on 38 minutes.
Hannah Cain showed great composure down the right, looking up to find Lehmann positioned in the middle and the Swiss international made no mistake, guiding a first-time finish into the bottom corner.
The visitors conjured a response to going behind almost immediately after the break, with captain Patten turning home Lynn Wilms’ corner at the near post.
The winner
Villa very nearly completed the turnaround just minutes later, with Hanson inches away from finding the back of the net after a free-flowing move involving half-time substitute Ebony Salmon.
Patten almost grabbed a second herself, too, heading a Jenna Nighswonger corner onto the roof of the net.
Villa were not to be denied, however, and would find a way through with six minutes to play. A quick counter attack, launched by Roebuck’s throw out, led to Hanson driving through on goal and squeezing the ball past Leitzig. A painful ending, it’s all eyes on next Sunday now.
