LCFC Women beaten in final Barclays WSL game at King Power Stadium
Shannon O’Brien scored a consolation in Sunday's 3-1 defeat
Goalkeeper Katie Keane reacted to making her full debut for the Foxes
Three goals within the first half hour gave the reigning Barclays Women's Super League champions a commanding lead at King Power Stadium, but the Foxes rallied to get a goal back and keep it a contest.
Latching onto a loose pass from Lucy Bronze, Shannon O’Brien scored her sixth goal of the season, which would end up being the last goal of the match, too.
Speaking on the immense challenge of facing one of the world’s best sides, the 19-year-old remained proud of her team's effort, especially in the second half.
“The first three goals are class finishes from them, and there’s not a lot you can do about that,” Keane explained. “Sometimes this happens in football.
Katie Keane made her home debut against Chelsea.
“But we take it one game at a time, and I’m proud of the girls for how we reacted and dealt with that. Obviously, it was my debut at home, and it was a good game for me so delighted my family could see it.
It’s been an incredible week for our young ‘keeper, who was brought in at half-time against Arsenal in midweek, then made her home debut against Chelsea four days later.
“I’m just a young girl from Ireland going up against them (Sam Kerr and Lauren James), but it’s incredible and a dream come true really,” the shot-stopper continued.
“It’s not the scoreline that we wanted but we are all focused on everything after that, it’s that play-off game to keep us up because we don’t want to go anywhere.
“Sam Tierney is an amazing character and captain, when that third goal went in, we said, right that’s enough, we’ve got to stick together, and fight and Rick [Passmoor] reiterated that in the dressing room.
“You can see the heart, and we kept fighting until the very end.”
The 19-year-old spoke about taking confidence into the play-off game.
Our place at the bottom of the table has already been confirmed, meaning we will face Charlton Athletic at the Valley on Saturday 23 May in a play-off.
With one final regular season game to come beforehand, against Everton at Goodison Park, the Ireland Under-19 international hopes the second half against Chelsea can give us confidence heading into the final two.
Keane added: “It’s hard, when you’re low on confidence, to come out after that game on Wednesday but as a team, we needed to keep fighting.
“We may have lost a few of our mini battles on the day, but I think we made up for that in the second half.
“We deserve better than what we’ve got this season, we stick together and you should see how we are in the dressing room at King Power Stadium, we just love each other to bits and we’re a family.
“The last two games are huge, and we need to keep fighting. It’s cliché but we always say that Foxes never quit, and that has to be our mentality going forward.”
