Conor Coady’s second goal for the Club - a close-range header - gave us an early lead inside 16 minutes. And while two more headers either side of the break put Europe-chasing Forest in front, from Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood, City earned a share of the spoils through Buonanotte's tidy 81st-minute strike.
Substitute Jeremy Monga even came close to winning it for relegated Leicester deep into second-half stoppage time. But Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels’ superb stop prevented the 15-year-old from dramatically becoming the Premier League's youngster-ever goalscorer.
An early lead
Conor Coady
Facing a Forest side with UEFA Champions League qualification as the target, it was not necessarily a surprise to see Nuno Espírito Santo’s men wrestle early control over proceedings in the Nottingham sunshine.
Wood, once a Fox himself, looked to add to his impressive goal tally. He first hooked an Ibrahim Sangaré cross over Jakub Stolarczyk’s bar, then later nodded Anthony Elanga's delivery just off target. Nonetheless, it was City who struck first against the early run of play.
Luke Thomas’ long throws have become a notable weapon in recent weeks, and he launched another into the box in the 16th minute. Although Neco Williams’ header cleared the initial danger, Kasey McAteer - another Academy graduate - kept the ball alive, sliding it across to Bilal El Khannouss. His shot deflected off Wood’s leg and was parried by Sels, into the path of Coady, who headed home his first league goal for the Club.
Forest hit back
Jamie Vardy
Forest needed just 10 minutes to respond. They knew a point would guarantee them at least UEFA Conference League football next season, and they showed their intent from the off. Elanga’s free-kick - a decision which was vigorously contested by Thomas - was met with a glancing header from Gibbs-White to level the scores.
The home side maintained their momentum through the first half. Elliot Anderson came close with a sharp half-volley, only to be denied by a vital block from Oliver Skipp. A powerful strike from Nicolás Domínguez also tested Stolarczyk, who stood firm, before Wood headed the rebound over.
Despite Forest’s pressure and the lively atmosphere at the City Ground, the 1-1 scoreline offered encouragement for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester side.
City come again
Facundo Buonanotte
Forest continued to push after the break. Stolarczyk was relieved when Domínguez’s diving header - after Elanga’s cross had ricocheted off Wout Faes’ back - lacked the power to trouble him. The hosts completed their turnaround 11 minutes into the second half. Gibbs-White’s incisive cross sliced through the City defence, allowing Wood to guide a header into the bottom corner.
Later on, back from injury, Buonanotte briefly threatened with a header from an El Khannouss cross, while Jamie Vardy – making his 499th appearance for Leicester ahead of his summer departure – nearly picked out McAteer during a promising break. The visitors were stirring, though, and making it a fight at the City Ground.
Vardy’s next contribution was crucial. With 81 minutes on the clock, the No.9 threaded it through to Buonanotte, who skipped past Morato and coolly slotted into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations in the away end. Monga, just 15, was so unfortunate when Sels saved his last-gasp curler. Victor Kristiansen also had a late opening, but 2-2 it stayed. A game which could have yielded all three points, one is nonetheless a positive.
