Handing as many players as possible up to 60 minutes of match action, it was another worthwhile exercise for the Foxes, who defeated Peterborough United 3-1 last weekend.
Takahiro Akimoto’s early own goal handed us the lead and, despite Jovan Mijatovic’s equaliser from the half-way line, Jordan Ayew struck straight from a corner in the third of four 45-minute phases to win it for City.

The first 45-minute phase saw a speedy start from the Foxes, especially 16-year-old winger Jeremy Monga. Fresh from becoming our second-youngest debutant at the end of last season, Monga was in the thick of the early action.
His eighth-minute shot deflected up and gave Kasey McAteer a headed opening, but the Academy graduate’s effort skimmed the crossbar. Shortly afterwards, City were in front, Monga’s shot being diverted unwittingly into the net by OHL defender Takahiro Akimoto.
Louis Page, who netted a brace against Peterborough last weekend, had a free-kick well saved by Tobe Leysen too, while Charly Ikwuemesi’s header glancing wide was a moment of concern for the home side. Into the second phase, mind you, OHL were indeed level through Jovan Mijatovic’s hit from the half-way line.

The second Leicester line-up introduced the likes of Ben Nelson, Stephy Mavididi and Woyo Coulibaly into the equation. Clear-cut chances were at a premium to start with, but the fitness benefits were still on display as the players put the work in amid 28-degree heat.
There was soon another change for the Foxes, too, as youth goalkeeper Stevie Bausor replaced Jakub Stolarczyk between the sticks. There was another chance for the hosts seven minutes into the third phase, but Boubakary Soumaré couldn’t find the target from a Jordan Ayew corner. The latter then rattled the crossbar from 20 yards out.
The format had been carefully crafted to give as many players as possible a full 60 minutes of match action. Aside from an early withdrawal for Victor Kristiansen, that was an objective which was achieved, building on the 45 minutes against Posh last weekend.
Late chances

Just before the final team switch-up for City, they were in front in the 118th minute. Jordan Ayew was possibly looking for a team-mate in the box, but in fact found the goal straight from a corner in front of the stand housing the Blue Army.
With the third and final line-up on the pitch for the last hour, there was nearly another Leicester goal in the 134th minute. Academy defender Tom Wilson-Brown sprayed an inch-perfect diagonal over to James Justin on the right. The full-back ran onto it and smashed it goalwards, but was denied well by Maxime Prévot.
Patson Daka was the man leading the line for the final phase and Prévot had to get a strong arm to his fierce drive in the 148th minute to thwart the Zambian. There was still work for Stevie Bausor at the other end to see out the result as well, frustrating Thibault Vlietinck from point-blank range. Daka tested Prévot once more later on, too, but 2-1 it remained in a game where the focus was on building fitness to be ready for the new Championship season.
