Jakub Stolarczyk is set to be absent for the rest of the season

Manager Russell Martin delivered the news during Friday’s press conference, ahead of the visit of Oxford United a day later, a real blow after Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

The Polish goalkeeper was forced to withdraw just six minutes into that contest, with Martin now able to confirm the fear that it was a serious injury for our No.1.

It means he joins Ben Nelson in expecting to miss the entirety of the season, with Martin also providing an update on the centre-back on Friday. Nelson has recently had an operation and is recovering well.

On Stolarczyk, he said: “I feel so disappointed for the big guy because he’s been amazing. He’ll be out for the season. He needs an operation on his knee.

“Something so innocuous… the only silver lining for all of it, when I spoke to Jakub, is that he and Ben will get to do their rehab together.

“They’re in a really similar position, albeit Jak a few weeks behind. They’re two amazing people, young men, that I absolutely love to bits as people and as football players.

“Both will be huge losses on the pitch. Off it, they’ll work hard and push each other and drive each other on. I hope we’ll get one or both of them back before the end of the season, but as it stands, we’ve got to prepare for them not to be involved at all this season.”

Also providing an update on Nelson, Martin added: “Ben had an operation, it was good. He’s in a good place. Jak will hopefully have an operation next week all being well and then we’ll assess it from there.”

The Club now has a duty of care to both Stolarczyk and Nelson, Martin says, to help them through their recoveries.

“As human beings, we need to make sure they’re looked after,” he explained. “It’s really as simple as that. As you can probably tell, I’m really gutted about Jakub.

“The whole team and squad are – and the whole place was. [The two injuries are] probably the only downside of this last eight or nine weeks because the guys have been brilliant.

“Jakub’s was so innocuous. We knew it was a bad one straight after the game with the swelling and the pain he was in because he’s a warrior, Jak. I’m really hurt for them, for him, and like I say, we’ll do everything we can to support him on his journey back.”

Elsewhere, there was news on Conor Chaplin and Caleb Okoli, both of whom have been absent over recent weeks. The Manager is hopeful they could return soon, although Saturday's Oxford game is probably too soon.

“He’s in a good place, Chappers (Chaplin), but it’s probably looking more like next week to be honest,” the Manager said. “And Caleb. He’s back on the grass now and moving well. Hopefully we’ll have both of them back for next week.”
