In a fixture which marked Remembrance ahead of kick-off, City twice went ahead through Sammy Braybrooke and Kamari Doyle, only for Alex Revell’s men to hit back through Ben Broggio and later Tuğra Turhan, to claim a share of the spoils.
Sitting 10th in the table, Sky Bet League One duties now pause, with an Emirates FA Cup First Round tie against Oxford City on the horizon next Friday (7:45pm GMT kick-off).
Setting our stall early
Leicester City
We came into this one full of confidence, boosted by the midweek triumph over Wigan Athletic, and City’s start was lightning quick. The clock had only just ticked past one minute when Luke Thomas’ excellent delivery from the left allowed Doyle to send the ball back across goal for Braybrooke, one of the two changes in our XI, who was on hand to net from close range, scoring his first senior Leicester goal.
Russell Martin’s men continued to control proceedings with Riis’ shot on the turn collected by Tommy Setford, before the Dane clipped the upright after a free-flowing Foxes move which involved goalscorer Braybrooke and Louis Page.
Thomas, again at the heart of it from the left, then picked out Braybrooke in the middle and the Academy graduate teed up John Lundstram to strike on his return to the side, finding Setford equal to his venomous strike, tipping it over the top.
The tide turns
Louis Page
Broggio hit one straight at Alex McCarthy, who palmed away the effort, as Boro attempted to bring themselves back into the game. And they would do just that from a Phoenix Patterson cross when Broggio fired in from close range.
Having created the first, Patterson was on the hunt for a goal of his own, but this time McCarthy was able to claim.
Eager to re-establish some Foxes dominance, Will Alves flashed in a cross that Riis was close to getting on the end of, prior to the forward’s header from Thomas’ cross being kept out by Setford.
Half-chances kept coming for City as Warren O’Hora nodded Braybrooke’s cross wide after Riis’ free-kick deflected wide, but we’d go in level at the interval.
Back ahead
Kamari Doyle
Intent on breaking through the stubborn Stevenage rearguard, Leicester were on the charge early. Lundstram could not find the target from Braybrooke’s cutback, mind you, though Doyle came close when Page found Thomas on the left and he picked out our No.27 in the middle, who saw his goalbound shot blocked by visiting captain Carl Piergianni.
Riis soon found space to unleash a powerful drive from the edge of the box which was tipped over by the increasingly busy Setford. The offside flag may have been raised once the 28-year-old forward struck the post for the second time in the afternoon, meeting another Thomas cross, but it was a further demonstration of City’s attacking intent.
It was only a matter of time, it seemed, before the deadlock would be broken once more. And so it proved; Doyle sweeping home from close range after Alves’ dangerous looking cross could only be parried into his path.
Sucker punch
Will Alves
Thomas continued to provide an outlet down the left and when Riis rose to meet the cross, Filbert Way rose in expectation of a potential third, though it would land wide of the target.
Another goal would arrive, but at the other end. Chem Campbell’s deflected cross, turned home by Turhan, his first touch since coming off the bench moments earlier, got the visitors back on level terms.
As the minutes ticked down, shouts for a penalty were turned away by referee Stephen Parkinson, after Earley appeared to raise his arm to a Riis cross.
Liam Cullen’s first action after coming on was to win possession high up, allowing Braybrooke to feed Thomas down the left and his strike was inches away from the far corner, but that would be our last chance.
