We drew 2-2 with Stevenage at King Power Stadium on Saturday
Sammy Braybrooke and Kamari Doyle scored for the Foxes
There was clear frustration for Manager Russell Martin after full-time
He felt his side dominated the game but conceded two poor goals
Saturday’s Sky Bet League One contest looked to be going the way of the Foxes following Sammy Braybrooke’s opener inside two minutes, but the visitors hit back through Ben Broggio and then Tuğra Turhan after Kamari Doyle had edged us back ahead in the second half. An unsatisfactory end to the game, Martin expressed his disappointment with the way his side failed to deal with the limited opportunities created by the opposition, ultimately leading to only taking one point instead of three.
“We should win the game; we should score more goals,” he told us following full-time at King Power Stadium. "We concede a poor goal at the start. Alex has been amazing for us and he makes a mistake, that can happen.
“I'm just so disappointed with the quality of goals we concede. We have so many players in the box and we have to defend the cross. We're in a really good position at one point in the box and then almost switch off and think it's been dealt with.
“A couple of young guys [were] a bit naive in their decision making at that point, but that’s part of their growth and learning. We have enough men in the box to really deal with it still.
“I thought [in] the second half we played so well, [were] so dominant against a team that don't give up many chances. We had some really big ones. They have one touch, I think they didn't touch the ball in our box once in the second half, and then they scored.
“They didn't look like scoring. We ran, we fought, we played some really good football. We looked a real threat and we end up drawing the game. We can't accept the goals that we concede.
“We can't concede two goals today, not with our dominance. The second goal is obviously so frustrating.”
Lying 10th in Sky Bet League One as a result of Saturday’s stalemate, it was difficult to assess the positives because of the nature of the end result, though Martin was impressed with large parts of the display, barring those two key moments.
The 40-year-old continued: “We have to, in-possession and out of possession, stick to what we work on, and we work on some really key principles in the box and we don't deliver it, we don't do it.
“I said to the players, I just can't accept that we draw the game today. There's a lot of positives. There's so many good bits about the performance, but we have to win the game. I should be talking to you about a win.
“It's probably our best performance at home, in terms of mixing the play up, attacking the backline a lot, spending a lot of time in the final third, some brilliant performances.
“In an ideal world, we’d have took Will Alves off, he’s been ill all week, same as Kami (Kamari Doyle). We’ve had four or five of them not feeling very good. Will was a doubt for the game yesterday and it was amazing what he did, putting in that shift.
“When we make changes, we have to be stronger, and in the last couple of games, we’ve made subs and they’ve been really good. Today, we've got enough fresh legs on the pitch and we have to see it out.”
