Leicester City were held to a 2-2 draw at Bristol City in midweek
Luke Thomas reflected on the point picked up at Ashton Gate
Ipswich Town are the visitors to King Power Stadium this Saturday
The Foxes need to produce a 90-minute performance, he says
The Foxes earned a point at Ashton Gate, with Jordan Ayew’s penalty and a Bobby De Cordova-Reid strike – his second in as many games – seeing us lead by two at the break. Gerhard Stuber’s side came back strongly, however, halving the deficit less than a minute into the second half via Mark Sykes’ goal, before Emil Riis’ late leveller saw the Robins take a share of the spoils.
Reflecting on a game of two halves, Thomas believes the game plan worked well across the opening 45, with clinical finishing putting the Foxes in a good position which we could not then capitalise on to see out victory.
“I felt in the first half we defended really well as a block and caught them on the counter a few times,” the full-back said post-match. “I thought we were a real threat going forward and that showed with us going in at half-time 2-0 up.
“We knew they were going to press us high, which they did. It was a really nice penalty. He (Ayew) stuck it in the back of the net, which is the main thing. We noticed on the backline that they would be three versus three with Stephy, Jordan and Abdul.
“It was important to get in behind them, which we did and then Abdul has picked it up, done his magic and put it across for Bobby, who stuck in the back of the net. We went in at half-time in a really good position.”
Up against it from the outset in the second period as the hosts switched up the momentum, it took a big defensive effort in the closing stages to hold on to a draw, though City could have won it late on; substitute Silko Thomas going close with a curling effort.
“It’s never easy when you concede a goal a minute into the second half,” the defender admitted. “It’s going to put you on the back foot and that’s how the game panned out, really. Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold on to it.
“It’s tough. It’s the way football works sometimes. They had the fans onside giving them that boost and they were crossing balls in quite a lot, so it was important for us to stick together, which I felt like we did and we were really unfortunate.
“It took a deflection first and it’s gone in the back of the net. Being 2-0 up and then not coming away with a win, it’s always tough.”
A quick turnaround heading into facing Ipswich Town at King Power Stadium on Saturday (3pm GMT kick-off), the 24-year-old outlined the importance of getting set for that encounter back on home soil, with all eyes on returning to winning ways.
The Academy graduate added: “It was a really good first half and it’s about going back to the drawing board, focusing on Saturday now and hopefully we can put in a full 90-minute performance like the first half and come away with the three points.
“They (games) are every few days throughout the whole season, especially at this time around Christmas. You’re playing a lot so it’s key to get your recovery in and we’ll be ready on Saturday.”
