The Syston-born defender, who joined the Foxes when he was just seven, revealed his excitement to continue a near lifelong journey in City blue, which began all the way back in 2008.
From watching on the terraces with his dad, to coming through the ranks in the Academy harbouring dreams of making it as a professional, before earning the chance to step up into the senior squad, the full-back is Leicester through and through.
“I’m really happy to sign a new deal at this Club,” he told us, sitting down to discuss the news in Seagrave. “It’s a club that I’ve been at since I was very young, so I’m happy to have another four years here and hopefully more to come after that.
“It’s the team I’ve supported since I was born, really. My dad has brought me up to support Leicester City and then I’ve come here since I was young. Obviously, I came through the ranks and that’s another reason I’m glad to sign here for four more years.
“Playing football at that age, all you want to do is to play games and score goals. It was just about enjoying it when I was younger. I was only seven years old, so it’s a long time ago now!
“It’s definitely something that I’ve cherished over the years and throughout my time here. But it comes thick and fast and before you know it, you’re in the First Team changing room.”
Some many memorable moments have followed from that point onwards. There have been ups and downs, of course, but countless highlights can be picked out across his City career. Starting the 2021 FA Cup Final triumph, providing the assist for Youri Tielemans’ winning goal, is right up there in terms of achievements.
It also stands out for another reason, too. Amid the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, around 6,000 of the Blue Army were able to watch the historic day play out at Wembley Stadium, something the 25-year-old had never experienced before.
“That FA Cup day,” Thomas recalled, “for me, it was my first (senior) game in front of fans, so I was definitely nervous before the game. But it was one of the best days of my life and the best feeling that you can get in football, really.
“You probably don’t take it in at the time but at the end of each year you do get to look back on the years you’ve had and be really grateful for where you are today.”
One of several current squad members to have emerged from an highly acclaimed, well-trodden pathway, the likes of Hamza Choudhury, Ben Nelson and Jakub Stolarczyk all continue to shine a light on the Academy, as do more recent names to have moved into the First Team picture and make their debuts, including Louis Page, Jeremy Monga, Jake Evans and Olabade Aluko.
The progression under Martí Cifuentes is clear to see, Thomas believes, with improvements continuing as the Sky Bet Championship season unfolds.
“It’s a fantastic club to be at,” he explained. “We’ve shown over the last few years the number of players that we’ve got coming through the Academy – not just Hamza but Ben Nelson came through, Jak came through.
“It obviously goes to show the quality that we’ve got in the Academy and hopefully we’ll have many more to come.
“We’ve only lost one (league) game in five so far. Hopefully we can continue that streak. I think we can get the performance level higher and win many more games.
“I feel like the last few weeks we have really gelled and we’ve shown real togetherness throughout games.
“That’s been coming through with the results we’ve been getting and hopefully by the end of the year we’ll be up there and get promoted again.”
