It’s a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers up next for the Foxes in the Premier League
Five matches remain in the season after relegation to the Championship was confirmed
Pride is on the line for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side, says defender Luke Thomas
The full-back has come into the XI in recent weeks and impressed
Our first fixture since relegation from the Premier League was confirmed, the trip to Molineux - a 3pm kick-off on Saturday - still has something riding on it according to the full-back, who also reflected on a frustrating campaign which has seen City collect just 18 points and sit a further 18 adrift. “It’s been a disappointing season,” the 23-year-old acknowledged. “We’ve not been at it at all, really. We’ve not shown the qualities that we know we have as a group throughout the season.
“We’ve probably got what we’ve deserved. We’ve not put in the performances and won games. You could probably see it coming a few weeks ago. Obviously now it’s come, it’s a difficult one to take.
Up against Mohamed Salah.
“It was only five weeks ago we felt like we were still in it, but for them (Wolves) to win five games on the bounce, fair play to them, they’ve got the results that they’ve needed and been getting victories. They’ve done well.
“But that’s the highs and lows of football. We got relegated, got back promoted and then we’ve been relegated again. It’s the way football works but we’ve got to look at ourselves and drag ourselves back to bring ourselves back into this division.”
Defeat to Liverpool on Easter Sunday sealed our fate, though it was another improved performance from the Foxes which could have at least seen us take something from the game on another day, Thomas believes, having earned a point at Brighton & Hove Albion a week prior.
The defender continued: “We knew that going into the game, if Arsenal lost and Liverpool won, they could win the league and us get relegated at the same time. It was always going to be a difficult day for us if we were to lose the game. Liverpool are a top side, they’ve done really well this season and they deserve to be winning it.
“We said to ourselves over the last few weeks that if we could get our performances right, we’d be in with a chance of winning games. I feel like we’ve done that and been in games. Whereas before that, against Newcastle and Man Utd, we didn’t show the qualities that we have and we got beat by a fair few goals.
“But against Brighton and Liverpool, at least we put on a bit of a performance for our fans. We wanted to win the game, that’s what it was mainly about. I felt I did okay on the day, but not getting the result - that’s the main part in football - and it was a disappointing one.”
Discussing priorities for the final stretch of 2024/25, attention has turned to planning for next season in the Championship, while there is also pride on the line with five matches remaining, starting in the West Midlands against Vítor Pereira’s side.
“It’s about pure pride now,” the former England Under-21s international added. “We’ve got to regroup as a team and look at next season. We’ve got to put in some performances at the back-end of the season.
“It’s just about focusing on ourselves, we’ve got nothing to lose now so we can go there, put in a performance and hopefully get a result. We have to focus on what we’re going to do next season as well, keep improving the way we’re playing and take that into next year.
“I feel the level from the Championship to the Premier League is just getting bigger and bigger at the moment. As you can see this year, it’s been really difficult for us three teams coming up and with the intensity of the Premier League, I don’t feel like there’s any league like it.
"The standard of players and the ability that almost all of the teams have is so high now, so you’ve got to be on it every game to be getting results. Obviously, we’ve failed this year, but hopefully we can come back.”
