Aiming to end a run of successive Sky Bet Championship defeats either side of Christmas, the Foxes host the Rams on Monday evening (7:45pm GMT kick-off) in the second East Midlands Derby of the month.
Always a tasty affair, Cifuentes spoke ahead of the game about what he feels will be key to turning form around as we head into our final fixture of the calendar year…
‘We are pushing’
A big victory over Derby.
Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Oliver Skipp and Jordan James were all on the scoresheet for City at Pride Park at the start of December as we secured a 3-1 victory over John Eustace’s side. Keen to replicate that level of performance on home soil, Cifuentes believes recent losses must act as motivation to earn a more positive result.
The 43-year-old commented: “You know my thinking is that it doesn’t matter if you come from a good win or a defeat, you think that the next game is always the most important of the season for me and the main focus. I think that about every game. It doesn’t matter if it’s gameweek three or 45.
“Every game is important, but we know about the rivalry between the teams. We got a good result against them a few weeks ago and we want to repeat that with a similar scoreline to what we had there.
“We are pushing every day and we are working hard during every week. We want everybody to be accountable and there is a reality in football that you show it through your performances and then at the end, your performances will make the results.
“The last couple of results should create more energy for us, in terms of showing a reaction. We need to push to get a good result.”
‘Be consistent’
Losing out to Javi Gracia's side.
The Hornets emerged with all three points on Boxing Day, with James’ early opener cancelled out by Othmane Maamma on the stroke of half-time, prior to Mattie Pollock’s winner for the visitors, on a frustrating afternoon at King Power Stadium.
Cifuentes continued: “Obviously, we asked the players to show a strong reaction and that’s why we are all disappointed because the last game was not what we wanted and then to get that result was definitely not what we wanted.
“I don’t think that Watford created a lot of chances. Obviously in the last 15 minutes, it was more open and we had a couple of passes that created a little bit of uncertainty, but I think it was quite a tight game. Unfortunately, we just get punished for details and situations we should cope better with.
“Consistency is extremely key, in the way we train, in the way we perform in getting those results. To get what you want, you need to be consistent.”
‘There’s more quality’
Back on home soil on Monday.
Acknowledging the support from the Blue Army, the Spaniard accepted that supporters will not be happy with the performances against both Queens Park Rangers and Watford but urged fans to stick with us as we strive to improve results.
“We want them to understand how important it is to push together,” he explained. “We cannot be thinking all the time about the next game. It’s about showing and doing and performing now, not just thinking if we have a good run because the games are running and at the moment, we are not in a position in the table that we are happy with.
“There is no hiding in the fact I cannot be happy, as a manager, with the position or performance of the team. I understand that the fans can be angry at the moment because that’s not where we want to be as a team. We need to engage them.
“The main thing for me is that the fans are proud of what they see and I’m sure that one day they will feel proud. We cannot win every game but as long as the commitment and accountability is there, I think they will be on our side.
“No one in the Club is happy, the players are not happy, we need to do something about it and to do it, make sure that we push. What we are doing now is not enough. We need to deliver in the moment because I am 100 per cent convinced there is more quality in the squad but we need to show it, not just talk about it.”
