  • City were beaten 3-0 by Southampton on Tuesday night
  • Martí Cifuentes spoke post-match at St. Mary’s Stadium
  • The Manager was frustrated by the manner of the goals
  • The hosts scored all three in the first half against 10-man City
A Taylor Harwood-Bellis brace, coming either side of Finn Azaz’s strike, saw the Saints claim all three points at St. Mary’s Stadium. The three goals came in the first half and Leicester City’s uphill task was made tougher following Olabade Aluko’s red card.
Reflecting on a tough evening on the South Coast, Cifuentes felt the game got away from his side quickly after the first goal, frustrated to have conceded twice from set-pieces.
“It’s definitely a disappointing night,” the Spaniard commented post-match. “In the first 15 minutes we started well, but perhaps the first goal, it doesn’t matter if it’s offside or not, it cost us too much, so we have to react better than we did.

“We know how much the first goal in a game will affect that. It’s very disappointing, but as a manager I don’t try and hide behind things that we cannot control.
“It’s very frustrating. I think the third one is soft on the marking we have to defend better. In the last two games, we have conceded too many situations like this.”
A busy period heading towards Christmas, with 10 games coming up in the next five weeks, attention quickly turns to preparing for Sheffield United in Saturday’s early kick-off. The 43-year-old was also appreciative of the support from the City fans who made the journey down to the South Coast for a midweek fixture.

“It’s about showing respect to those who came here on a Tuesday night, it’s a long trip,” he continued. “And trying to make sure that we fight for each other. We knew the game would be difficult to turn.
“But at the same time, to show some pride and start to prepare mentally, it’s so important that we think about how to react on Saturday, because we need a strong reaction to show that today was just one of those days where things didn’t go our way.
“That’s the reason behind the subs, definitely trying to keep some players as fresh as we can for Saturday. It’s an unfortunate situation that we’ve got, at this moment of the season, this number of injuries. We just need to cope, all of us, to take one step forward and show that we are ready for Saturday.”
