  • City beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in the Sky Bet Championship on Monday
  • Abdul Fatawu scored an injury-time winner at King Power Stadium
  • Jordan Ayew earlier put the Foxes ahead before Karlan Grant’s equaliser
  • Martí Cifuentes gave his post-match thoughts following the home victory
A 2-1 home victory was secured at King Power Stadium on Monday night courtesy of Abdul Fatawu’s stoppage-time stunner, coming after Jordan Ayew had given us an early lead. That opener, cancelled out by Karlan Grant, looked to have given both sides taking a share of the spoils, until the last-gasp winner from Fatawu - his fifth goal of the league season.
“It always feels good when it’s a late goal that gives you three points, especially when it’s a fantastic goal,” City’s Manager told us following full-time. “Credit to the players, who believed until the end and they were working hard until the last minute.
“I’m very happy for Abdul because, just before this action, he was cramping a little bit, he wanted to keep pushing in the last minutes and it shows that when you believe in something and there is this togetherness inside the team, then you get your rewards.

“I think we started the game well, especially in the first minutes, we had control of the ball, good combinations from the whole team and then we struggled and started to drop a little bit.
“It’s something that we need to improve. We spoke in the half-time about the things that we had to push and certainly the second half was not great.
“We conceded chances and the only positive is that the team stuck together, they pushed hard and showed personality to defend deep when needed, but we had a period that was really tough. To get the reward with this goal obviously feels better because a win is a win, but what I value most is the togetherness of everyone."
Although it was not the performance that he wanted, Cifuentes was nevertheless pleased to triumph in our first home fixture of 2026, making it back-to-back home victories for the Foxes, moving us into the top half of the Sky Bet Championship table, four points outside the top six.
That’s now three wins in four on home soil, but the Spaniard also acknowledged how it was important to recover from the defeat at Sheffield United on New Year’s Day. A fourth game in 11 days, he felt the team showed commitment and spirit to hold the visitors off, also requiring several smart saves from Jakub Stolarczyk.

He continued: “I’m very happy for him (Stolarczyk) because he’s still a young ‘keeper and he’s been improving since we arrived here. It was important for him as well to have a performance like this after the last games.
“We are also happy because he did really well commanding the box, some good saves but I think the feeling is that he had a very strong performance.
“It’s always important to change the dynamic really quick and make sure that you get three points again in front of our fans. I really appreciate the support from the ones who came here on a very cold night.
“Hopefully, after the late goal, they can go home happy with three points. It’s important that we are critical and that we look at ourselves and where we can improve. But at the same time, to value the effort of the guys to earn the three points.
“It’s massive. It’s always so important to have this consistency at home. We want to show a much better level of performance, but we are in this stage where a lot of young players are getting into the team and we understand where we are, but that does not mean that we are not aware of all the parts that we need to improve.”
