Admir Bristric scored a hat-trick, opening his account for the Club in a first half which also saw Tommy Watson notch his first two Leicester City goals. The visitors did pull one back on the stroke of half-time through Seth Chingwaro, though Bobby De Cordova-Reid added the sixth shortly after the break to round off the scoring.

With the international window now underway, our next competitive fixture also comes in this competition, travelling to face Stevenage at Sporta Arena on Tuesday 6 October (7pm kick-off). Our next opponents defeated Walsall 6-1 away from home, but we still lead Southern Group B after matchday one.

Sky Bet League One action returns to Filbert Way four days after that trip to Stevenage, meanwhile, hosting Peterborough United in a 3pm kick-off.

Bristric off the mark

Following a flurry of early chances, it took a quarter of an hour for the deadlock to be broken. Bosnian forward Bristric found it, arrowing a low finish which sneaked underneath Michael Allen in the Fulham U21s goal.

Allen had made a series of impressive saves prior to that opener, including a sensational stop to claw away De Cordova-Reid’s header, but that goal opened the floodgates. Kamari Doyle found De Cordova-Reid with a pinpoint pass in the box and the Jamaican unselfishly squared the ball across for Bristric to tap in his second of the evening.

Will Alves was the provider for his third, meanwhile. Industrious to keep the ball in play, he then picked out Bristric in the middle, who applied a low finish past the ‘keeper for his hat-trick. That was Allen’s last action, unable to continue in the Fulham goal.

Watson at the double

Another man who made his presence felt in the first half was Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Watson. Initially seeing a shot blocked on its route to goal, the young winger would not have to wait long to etch his name onto the scoresheet.

With five minutes of normal time remaining at the end of the first 45, his curling finish from the edge of the box was the result of quick play from Bristric, who added build-up play to his growing array of contributions. As the game moved into first-half stoppage-time, Watson grabbed his second in quick succession. After a one-two with De Cordova-Reid, the 20-year-old drilled his finish past substitute ‘keeper Matt Bagot.

He might have had three himself in the second half, teed up by Doyle while on a hat-trick, but his first-time effort from 20 yards out curled wide of the mark, before hitting the post late on in proceedings.

Closing it out

The youthful visitors did pull one back before the break when Seth Chingwaro cut back onto his left and planted a shot inside Franco Ravizzoli’s near post.

There would be no clean sheet, then, but coming back out, it was clear that City would be on the hunt for more. And just five minutes into the second period, a volley from range from De Cordova-Reid added to our tally.

Three senior debuts were then handed out to Academy prospects Lorenz Hutchinson, Tommy Neale and Will Lawrence just after the hour-mark and Hutchinson almost made a goalscoring contributions, hitting the post after cutting inside onto his left, but by then the three points were all-but in the bag.
