Leicester City were put on the path to three Sky Bet League One points by Lundstram’s volley just before half-time, before a lovely Doyle curler doubled the advantage in the second half.
There was still defensive work to be done, mind you, after Alfie May halved the deficit for the visitors, but Russell Martin’s men held on for a morale-boosting success in our Everyone’s Game fixture, ahead of heading to Bromley on Tuesday night.
An encouraging start
Martin made three changes to the XI defeated by Peterborough United last weekend, as Harry Souttar, Sammy Braybrooke and Doyle came in.
The first half wasn’t laden with chances, but City were largely on top. Emil Riis will have been rueing his luck with chances both at the start and the end of the opening 45.
His first was curled into the gloves of Rovers goalkeeper Tommy Simkin, while the second was diverted over the bar from close range after Luke Thomas’ cross.
Lundstram’s rocket
With just one additional minute to work with at the end of the half, Leicester knew the perfect ending would be a goal and pushed forwards.
When the ball looped in the air on the edge of the box, Lundstram was lurking. He waited for it to come down and planted his left boot through it – smashing it into the near corner.
The celebrations were a mix of joy and relief around King Power Stadium as we took a precious lead into the interval to defend and try to build on.
Doyle makes sure
We came out in the second period with an intention to keep the momentum building. On the hour mark, the lead was doubled in fine style by Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Doyle.
He picked it up on the angle of the box, over the left, taking a touch and curling it wonderfully into the far corner to give us some breathing space.
It was tense at times, especially after May beat O'Hora to the ball with six minutes remaining, turning in from close range. Will Alves, mind you, was unfortunate not to stretch our lead again, hitting the bar from range, while Alex McCarthy will have been pleased to save Owen Bailey’s last-gasp header for Doncaster late on.
