We beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1 in Sky Bet League One on Saturday afternoon
City returned to winning ways with goals from John Lundstram and Kamari Doyle
Manager Russell Martin reflected on a job well done after full-time on Filbert Way

John Lundstram and Kamari Doyle scored Goal of the Month contenders to put us in a commanding position before Alfie May scored late on, creating a tense final few moments in LE2.

The Foxes were able to see it out and toast a well-deserved three points according to Martin, who praised the players and the Blue Army during his post-match assessment of the home success.

“I thought we were really good after a difficult week last week,” our Manager began, speaking after full-time. “We showed so much character, so much fight, so much togetherness.

“We looked like a real team. I think it takes character and personality and the players showed that today. We defended really well when we had to. I think we were really comfortable defending when it came in the box.

“We fought first, we were aggressive before any of the football came out and then we played some great football. We have to live there all the time.

“We created a lot of chances. My only frustration probably is we didn’t score more goals. I’m disappointed we conceded a goal because I felt the lads deserved a clean sheet today.

“I really enjoyed the energy; the fans were great. A big thank you to them after last week. I’m really grateful for the energy they created, especially late on in the game when the players needed it.”

After a tough run of results, losing to Peterborough United last time out, it was the perfect response from City, who rise up to 14th in the Sky Bet League One standings ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Bromley.

“League One is not easy, winning is not easy,” the 40-year-old expressed. “We have to work so hard for it and really enjoy working hard and doing the ugly things and the difficult things as a team and a club.

“It’s nice and we have to have more of that. It’s not a game ticked off, [let’s] not get too high, but enjoy winning. Same as after last week, it’s just to focus on the work.

“Yes, disappointment and frustration, but today, a lot of pride in a lot of the aspects of the performance. I’m really proud of the players today and we have to go and back it up on Tuesday now.”

The deadlock was broken via Lundstram’s left-footed volley from a Louis Page corner on the stroke of half-time, before an equally impressive Doyle strike, curled into the opposite corner, saw the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee net his first in Leicester colours.

“We had some easier chances but we spoke so much about set plays so I’m really pleased for Kingy (Andy King) because he works so hard on the attacking set plays,” Martin explained.

“It’s a great strike but we looked a threat from the corner and he put Lunny in that position. He changed the set up. Lunny was in the box and he moved him to the edge and it paid off.

“Kami has real quality. He’s been so frustrated not scoring or getting more assists than he has done because he’s been in the box a lot. But he possesses so much quality and he helps the team a lot.”
