Leicester City had chances, with Sammy Braybrooke arrowing wide, Jayden Joseph hitting the bar, and Liam Cullen being denied late on, but it was a solitary point in Buckinghamshire.

Backed by a huge away following – 5,968 Foxes fans making the trip – it was a frustrating end for Russell Martin’s men, ahead of a home double-header, starting with the visit of Plymouth Argyle to King Power Stadium on Tuesday (7:45pm BST kick-off).

Early openings

We had the better changes of the first half against the Dons, but there was naturally some frustration to be going in level.

The clearest-cut opening came to Bobby De Cordova-Reid after just 10 minutes, with Harry Souttar cutting the backline open. While home defenders called for offside, De Cordova-Reid took the ball down and put his foot through it. The Jamaican, though, couldn’t keep it on target and powered it wide of the near post.

Joseph, back in the XI after a short injury, also went close when Conor Chaplin – on his league debut for us – slipped it through. Home goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray, mind you, was able to divert his crisp drive around the post.

Goalless at the break

Another Souttar forward delivery set Braybrooke on his way before the break, although the Academy graduate’s first-time hit was too close to MacGillivray. We came out for the second half with intent, but still struggled to break through.

Admir Bristric, who replaced Chaplin in the first half, combined well with Wes Burns, before taking a touch and stinging MacGillivray’s palms from the edge of the box. Braybrooke also tried to pick his spot from the resulting corner, but the ‘keeper was there again.

Substitute Harry Howell’s cross asked significant questions in the MK Dons box later on, with both Bristric and Tommy Watson in there, but the hosts did just enough to scramble the ball to safety.

Late chances go awry

As we headed into the latter stages, the pressure ramped up again, but there was to be no breakthrough. Braybrooke, at the heart of much of our play, went agonisingly close again with 16 minutes remaining, skidding a low arrow onto the outside of the post.

Martin’s men were piling bodies forward and, when the ball trickled across the box, the MK Dons defence stopped, believing the ball had gone out. Joseph kept playing and he planted his foot through the ball, clipping the crossbar.

There was more drama inside the three added minutes – just as Sam Nombe missed the chance to win it for the home side, heading over. A minute later, Christian McFarlane’s delivery sped across the goalmouth, but Cullen – off the bench – couldn’t apply a finish which would have sent the huge Blue Army into raptures.
