The Adobe Women’s FA Cup, a competition in which we set new records in last term, sees us head on the road for the first time this term, with Man City standing in the way of consecutive quarter-finals.
Ahead of Sunday’s 2pm GMT kick-off at Joie Stadium, here’s what the Manager had to say during her press conference at Belvoir Drive, addressing the media on Thursday afternoon...
‘More aggressive in our gameplay’
City lost out to Everton last weekend.
City conceded four goals last weekend for just the second time this season, losing to Everton at Walton Hall Park, and Miquel is hoping for a positive reaction from her team, in which everyone owns responsibility, to rectify their mistakes. “We are moving up well on the mental aspects and looking at the Everton game, they were more efficient than when we played them in the first phase,” Miquel told the media.
“I would still expect us to be a bit more alive and the players know that they could have done a lot better.
“We have to take it as a joker and make sure we don’t perform like that again; making sure we are much more aggressive in our gameplay.”
‘We want to be hard to beat’
Talking on defensive resilience.
With multiple unfortunate injuries to forward players, Miquel focus concerned the defensive aspects of the team in the earlier stages of the campaign.
Now, with more options at her disposal, the former Stade de Reims Manager is looking for accountability from the whole team, stating that they must learn from defeat against the Toffees.
Miquel added: “I wouldn’t say that I would expect the defence, more than a striker, to feel bad from the game. It’s on 11 players not individual areas.
“All the team know we should’ve done better, and we have been working on it, not just this week but since we came in at the start of the season.
“We want to be hard to beat, so for me, it’s about focusing on those mental aspects, and not listening to outside opinions about which games you should or shouldn’t be taking points from.”
‘Be as good as we can be’
Focused on the challenge at hand.
Last year’s run in the FA Cup was one for the ages, that saw Leicester make the semi-finals for the first time in their history.
Falling to a frustrating extra-time defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, Miquel is hoping to push on this season and the team to reach their full potential, but believes comparisons cannot be made, and wants the Foxes to learn from their loss at Joie Stadium early this campaign.
“It’s true that we have more choice now than when we faced Man City last time,” she continued. “But it is a different phase and both sides have changed.
“Our first intention will be to show more this time around than we did last weekend and see how the game goes. I want the players to fight and have no regrets when they come off the pitch.
“You can’t compare two seasons, of course they did well last year, but that was with different players in a different scenario, so we need to focus on this new season.
“If we want to reach the next step then we need to be as good as we can be.”
