For many generations of Foxes supporters, Nev was the voice of Leicester City after moving to the area in 1987, later becoming a commentator for BBC Radio Leicester, as well as the host of the local broadcaster’s supporter phone-in programmes.
Also a talented sportswriter, working for regional newspapers across the Midlands and penning several books – including some on the Foxes – it is Nev’s radio commentary which cemented his status as a reliable and respected journalist in Leicester.
Always armed with a quip and capable of summarising the match action with a trademark authoritative style, in later life Nev also worked for the Club’s in-house TV and radio stations. This return saw Nev take his place once more on the press benches to cover Leicester City’s historic 2016 Premier League title victory and subsequent UEFA Champions League adventure.
His journalism career began in 1956, with a reporter role at the Nottingham Evening Post, covering Nottingham Forest, Notts County and Derby County. Also reporting on county and test cricket alongside football, Nev later moved to the Birmingham Evening Mail in 1967, again following the fortunes of local sides Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City and West Bromwich Albion.
Another posting at the Coventry Evening Telegraph was next for Nev, in 1973, where he combined his local reporting duties with coverage of England internationals.
Arriving in Leicester in 1987, with wife Fran, that move commenced a love-affair both with Leicester City Football Club and the city of Leicester. Initially starting out as a freelance sportswriter and broadcaster in the region, Nev would become the definitive authority on the Foxes through his work with BBC Radio Leicester.
Renowned for a firm-but-fair assessment and sharp wit, Nev was admired greatly by the Blue Army, who came to trust his account of the action at Filbert Street and later King Power Stadium. Seeing the Club rise to the heights of English champions and Champions League competitors firsthand will have undoubtedly been a particular highlight of a wonderful career.
Nev’s warmth and kindness will be remembered by all who knew him, including colleagues at the Club who became friends across several eras. All at Leicester City send their condolences to his family – including wife Fran, daughter Ann, son David, grandsons Thomas and Joseph, granddaughter Lucy and greatgrandchildren Tyler and Lewis – as well as Nev’s friends at this sad time.
