Ricardo Pereira and Bobby De Cordova-Reid join Goal Difference programme
Project helps adults in Leicester experiencing mental health challenges
The visit formed part of our support for the EFL Week of Action
The visit took place at St Margaret’s Pastures Sports Centre, where the pair met with participants and learned more about the positive impact the programme is having on local people’s lives.
Supported by Leicester City Council, Goal Difference is a free mental health and wellbeing project that uses football as a tool to engage adults experiencing mental health challenges.
By combining weekly physical activity with open conversations and support, the initiative aims to make mental health services more accessible, relatable and appealing, especially to those who might not otherwise seek traditional forms of help.
Ricardo said: “It’s fantastic to see how Leicester City in the Community are bringing people together and making a difference beyond the pitch.
“The atmosphere today was positive, and it’s great to know the Club is supporting people in our community in this way.
“Mental health is something that affects everyone, so projects like Goal Difference are important. It was great to meet the participants and see how much they enjoy being part of this programme.”
During the visit, Ricardo and Bobby took part in a football session before joining an informal coffee and chat activity, where discussions focused on mental health, wellbeing and the importance of staying connected.
The players also spoke about their own lived experiences and the steps they take to look after their own wellbeing.
The EFL Week of Action shines a light on the impactful community work carried out by clubs, with our Goal Difference project being a leading example of how football can promote positive mental health and wellbeing.
