We have been relegated from the Premier League after a 1-0 defeat at home to Liverpool
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal proved to be the difference for the league leaders
Ricardo Pereira gave an honest assessment following full-time on Filbert Way
Reds substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the only goal of the game with a quarter of an hour to play at King Power Stadium, just 10 minutes after Conor Coady had one disallowed for a foul by Patson Daka on Alisson. That said, a draw wouldn’t have been enough to prevent Leicester’s place in the Championship for 2025/26 being set - only a win against the champions-elect would have been enough to prolong the fight to remain in the division.
Despite producing a more positive performance, it was still a ninth home Premier League defeat without scoring, and speaking post-match, Ricardo reflected on the season as a whole, as well as the improvement shown by Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side on Sunday afternoon.
“For me personally it wasn’t today that the season was done, it was long before,” the defender admitted. “I think a lot of things went wrong this season. We knew it would be a difficult season for us coming from the Championship, being in a different place from when we went down. It was a different Leicester for sure.
“Today the performance and the effort we put in, I believed we will get a result. That’s the main thing. But after that, we’ll look at how the team defend, how the team attack.
“We knew we would have some moments where we had to suffer against them. We did, we defended and we had some chances. Maybe with a little bit of luck we could have got something from the game.
“I think we were always in the game, even towards the end. We needed more like today in the other games.”
There are five matches remaining in 2024/25 for the Foxes, with a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers coming up next on Saturday, offering a chance to at least end a disappointing season by putting some points on the board. Leicester have 18 from 33 matches as it stands.
He added: “We have to focus on the present now and finish well, give our best and make the most of these last games to finish with a little bit of a different feeling and with some wins that will make it a little bit better.”
On a personal note, meanwhile, his first start since November following injury has allowed the full-back to build up his fitness after also making substitute appearances in our preceding three fixtures.
“When you’ve been out, you want to start, get minutes and help do your part,” the 31-year-old explained. “It’s been a long few months for me but I’m glad with that part.”
