Under pressure for periods of the second half at Stockport County, having established a three-goal cushion, we eventually came away from Edgeley Park with a 4-3 victory which brought us a first win on the road in 26/27.
Eager to back up that three-point tally earned in Sky Bet League One, attention now turns to facing Barnsley at Oakwell this Saturday, a 12:30pm BST kick-off in south Yorkshire.
The mentality shown was a key factor in collecting maximum points, Martin believes, as he also explained what needs to improve when fielding questions from the media in Friday’s pre-match press conference.
He commented from LCFC Training Ground: “I spoke after the (Oxford) game, while the Sunday was very difficult, the actual mood in camp, the way they trained, was fantastic, and is why we won the (Stockport) game, I think, with the week we had. The guys were brilliant.

“After a win, it makes things feel a bit lighter, but it’s been the same focus and commitment, the same intensity in training. They’ve prepared really well. I’ve really enjoyed it this week. Hopefully we can use that energy in the game tomorrow.
“We have to be better and cleaner than we were with the ball in the second half. In the first half, we were really good with the ball and then in the second half we dipped a little bit. And we have the manage the game and the momentum better than we did.
“The game was very broken down into different moments. We had some really good periods and then we had moments in which we had setbacks in the game and difficult periods. The lads got through that brilliantly.
“We have to play the game that we want as much as we can. In the last 25-30 minutes last week, we played too much of the game that Stockport wanted us to play, but they were really good.
“It was a tough game and we won. It was a brilliant win and now we have to back it up and follow it with a performance and result we can be really proud of tomorrow.”

We added to our goalkeeping ranks this week with the signing of experienced shot-stopper Dai Cornell, following four years at Preston North End, and Martin outlined what the 35-year-old will bring to our squad.
“He’s a really good person,” he outlined on the Welshman. “I spoke to a lot of people that had worked with him. He’s a really good goalie who has played at a good level for most of his career.
“He understands the role he is going to fulfil here but also backs himself to show what a good goalkeeper he is. First and foremost, and most importantly, he’s a brilliant character, really adds to the character and voice in this squad.
“Even last weekend, you could see the difference that makes with having John Lundstram, Emil Riis and Warren O’Hora on the pitch, new guys who have added a bit of steel and a bit of experience and knowhow. He’ll give us a bit of that as well.”
Saturday’s opposition have endured a mixed start to the campaign, currently sitting 18th with two wins and a draw from their opening six league matches.

The Tykes come into this encounter off the back of a 3-3 draw with fellow third tier outfit Peterborough United in the Carabao Cup Third Round in midweek, which then saw the Posh triumph 7-6 in a mammoth penalty shootout.
“I’ve seen a lot of them,” Martin analysed. “I watched them live in midweek at Peterborough. They’re really front foot, aggressive, so much energy, forward running, attacking threat, some good individual players and a team that works really hard.
“It’s not going to be an easy game at all. They will make it difficult for us. I’ve liked a lot of what they’ve done. I think they’ve been unfortunate in the last few games to be on the losing team, let alone the scores they’ve had.
“I’m sure Daniel [Stendel], the manager, is feeling that way. I have a lot of respect for what they are doing with a young team. They are brave and front-footed, so we have to be really ready for that.”
Our Manager also assessed what he wants to see heading into a two-week break from league action due to international call-ups, when work will continue in Seagrave.

“We want to go into it with a good feeling,” the 40-year-old added. “We want to win and will feel better about ourselves in the break if we win the game. We’ll go there with a gameplan to try and win, as we always will. It’s really important for us.
“We have a chance to win tomorrow, get points on the board which means our points tally over the last four games has been pretty good and consistent and we’ll keep getting better. We have to improve on a lot of things from last week but we have to show the same mentality as we did, but a different focus.
“We have to be better than we were. I really believe the way they’ve trained this week has set the guys up to go and deliver that on the pitch, so I’m really excited about the game tomorrow.
“It’s going to be hard work with the players on the way we want to play. We’ll have a look at the first seven league games after tomorrow and really focus and nail down on what has to be a priority for us over the next few weeks.
“There’s time to watch the next few opposition as well. There won’t be any rest here. There will be a lot of work, utilising the time as best we can.”
