In a breathless game which swung one way and then the other, Liam Cullen and Emil Riis both scored their first goals for the Club, either side of Jack Diamond’s equaliser, which saw the Foxes go in at the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Riis doubled his tally shortly after the restart, quickly followed by John Lundstram’s debut goal, putting us in a commanding position early in the second half. The hosts were not done, though, and scored twice in quick succession themselves, through Oliver Norwood and then Kyle Wootton, to put the pressure back on.

Managing to hold out after two County goals were flagged for offside, it’s a three points which lifts us up to 13th in the table, with next Saturday’s trip to face Barnsley at Oakwell next on the agenda (12:30pm BST kick-off).

Ahead twice

Deadline day signings Warren O’Hora and Lundstram came in for their debuts as we looked to put last weekend’s home defeat to Oxford United firmly in the rear-view mirror and there were promising early signs from Russell Martin’s charges when Will Alves’ cross was met by Riis, who saw his header saved before the offside flag subsequently went up.

Cullen would not be denied soon after, as the summer signing received the ball from Louis Page, taking a touch before swivelling towards goal and unleashing an arrowed strike from the edge of the box.

Looking for a leveller, Wootton was able to get his head to Norwood’s free-kick, but couldn’t trouble Alex McCarthy. Stockport did not have to wait long to respond, however, with Diamond, from the right, poking a low effort past our ‘keeper, restoring parity, albeit briefly.

In a frantic opening half, Harry Wood sent his attempt wide of the target after Ryan Glover danced his way into the box, but it was at the other end where the net would bulge again. A delicate finish from Riis, who lifted the ball over the onrushing Ollie Whatmuff, got us back ahead.

Jim McNulty’s home side continued to threaten themselves and there was a moment of disbelief around Edgeley Park when Glover headed onto the bar, before the ball cannoned back onto the upright twice more. Harry Souttar, Leicester captain on the day, was eventually able to clear the danger.

Goals galore

After the interval, it took Riis just four minutes to double his tally for the afternoon, striking low into bottom corner, from just outside the area, after showing purpose to cut in from the left.

Leicester’s third put some daylight between the teams and things got even better when Lundstram headed home for a debut goal, nodding in Page’s corner. A third assist for the Academy graduate, it was starting to become an excellent afternoon.

But Stockport weren’t down and out just yet and responded almost immediately. Norwood’s free-kick was inch-perfect, beating McCarthy and making it 4-2.

A quick-fire third Stockport goal really gave the home crowd belief. It was Wootton who claimed it, getting on the end of a cross which appeared to take a deflection off Souttar on its way into the net.

Late drama

Now with the momentum behind them, the hosts gave it everything in search of a share of the spoils. Twice Stockport supporters were up off their seats celebrating what they thought was an equaliser; twice denied by the offside flag.

First when Wootton flicked in Norwood’s free-kick, before Wootton was again at the heart of the action, heading towards goal before Wood touched it on its way in, but from an offside position.

Glover then headed over as the chances kept coming, before substitute Jason Adigun hit his first-time effort over the bar. McCarthy had to be called into action, too, tipping Wootton’s header over the top from a Ben Osborn cross, but that ensured the points were heading back to Leicester after all.
