Luton Town claimed all three points in Saturday’s Sky Bet League One encounter
Callum Marshall netted in stoppage-time after Liam Cullen had levelled late on
Foxes Manager Russell Martin assessed his side’s defeat at Kenilworth Road
Behind to Nahki Wells’ opener, it stayed that way until the 90th minute, when Liam Cullen curled in a superb equaliser after John Lundstram had been dismissed for the visiting Foxes. The drama wasn’t over there, however, with Town no.9 Callum Marshall netting a stoppage-time winner at Kenilworth Road.
Feelings of frustration with the goals we conceded were evident following full-time, having worked hard to get back into the game, as Martin outlined in his post-match analysis of our first defeat in three in Sky Bet League One. “We didn’t start the game well enough and then we wrestled it back in the first half,” he assessed. “We concede such a bad goal. It’s a big mistake from us, we give them the goal after we weathered the storm, we’d managed to ride it out.
“In the second half, we're really on top. They're hard to break down, they’re a good team, we spoke about that before the game. Lunny’s sending off makes it way more difficult. You can't do that when you’re on a yellow card, but he’s been brilliant for us.
“And we responded brilliantly. Cullen scored such a good goal. And then you can't get beat from there, we have to see it out. It’s an amazing point with 10 men to come back. We just don’t defend that last action in the last phase of the game.
“It's so frustrating to concede. We have such a good amount of bodies in the box with 10 men. They had numerical superiority; they’ve thrown caution to the wind. We still have so many bodies, we need to defend the box. We have to be calm in those moments and compete and we don’t.”
Emil Riis thought he had given us the lead in Bedfordshire, but for a late offside call which chalked off his opener, while there were shouts for a penalty in the second half when substitute Will Smallbone went down in the box. Martin, however, was keen to focus on what the team could have done better in key moments of the game, leading to our run of positive results ending.
“No excuses, they go with you or against you sometimes, but I’m truly frustrated,” the 40-year-old continued. “Everything we’ve displayed in the last couple of games, we didn’t do early on in the game and here it’s so important.
“Then we’re chasing the game again. When we get back in it, I said to the players, if you’re not going to win, you can’t get beat. There's not much between the two teams at all, except we give them two poor goals and we have to score a brilliant one.
“I'm so disappointed with the goals we give away. So much fight in the second half, the crowd were great and we let ourselves down in the first 20 minutes to half an hour and made it difficult for ourselves.
“It is what it is, a serious step backwards. It's frustration, but we have a chance to still make it a really good period of games for us by putting in two big performances and winning two games of football.”
