  • We were defeated 3-1 by Peterborough United at King Power Stadium on Saturday
  • Russell Martin gave his post-match thoughts following a disappointing afternoon
  • The Manager pointed to a lack of cutting edge and poor defending as our downfall against Posh
Posh struck three times in the opening 45 minutes, with Owura Edwards, Harry Leonard and Ethan Williams all on the scoresheet to hand Robbie Savage’s side three points at King Power Stadium, leaving us 17th in the Sky Bet League One table, eight matches into the season.
“We hurt ourselves so much with the goals we gave up,” our Manager assessed after full-time on Filbert Way. “We create a lot of chances, [but] don't score. We're in there, we have a lot of chances even early on the game, [but] don't score.
“The opposition throw everything at it, defend, and then we let someone inside, they score, and it changes the context of the game. I can't accept, we cannot accept, the goals we concede. And goals change games.

“We've played another game here and given away the first goal in such poor fashion, and then it changes everything. The goals, honestly, are so bad. I will never accept the goals we concede today. We have to be way better. We have better chances than they have in their box, and we don't convert them. It's the same story.
“I'm just really hurt by the goals we concede, because from Monday to Friday, what we see [is] the intensity, the fight, and then we delivered that for half an hour in the first half and it just ruins the game for everyone, for the supporters, for us, for the players.”
Emil Riis’ 68th-minute goal provided brief hope of a comeback which did not materialise and Martin bemoaned the defending which gave us a mountain to climb in the second half.
He continued: “If someone scores a brilliant goal against us and has to work so hard for it, that happens in football, but at the minute, they don't. They score goals like that and it's nowhere near good enough from us.

“One is a kick out of the goalkeeper's hands, and it bounces. At any level of football, you don't let the ball bounce. Then we have three players around the ball that come out of it, and it hits Warren [O’Hora] and goes in. The first one, we get back down the side, but then let the boy on his stronger foot and give him a shot. That shouldn't happen.
“The other goal, I think Luke [Thomas] tries to clear it, but probably goes with his wrong foot, and the guy scores. We have to take way more pride in the horrible things that are ultimately the basis.”
With Doncaster Rovers to come on Filbert Way next Saturday, we must pick ourselves up quickly in order to turn current form around.
He added: “We concede far too many goals for how many chances we give up, and we’ve scored way too few goals for the chances we create, and that's enough said. In both boxes, that's really where you make your career as a defender or an attacking player.
“And we have some guys at the minute that are finding a way, but they have to step up quickly. They have to really step up quickly. After this week, it’s going to take a big amount of effort, energy, work, and we have to put in a performance way, way better than we did for half an hour in that first half.”
