It was a perfect start to the new season, which leaves us fourth in early stages of the second division, after Leanne Cowan's own goal was the difference in Sheffield,
New faces, outstanding support and a clean sheet were the outcome of a hard-fought display at Bramall Lane on Sunday afternoon. We're next in action next weekend for the visit of Durham, with Season Tickets still available. Debutants on show
We announced eight new signings over the summer, and six of them were named in the starting XI. Leah Eddie accompanied Jessie Stapleton in defence, Sarah Mayling resumed her space at right-back, Araya Dennis was on the right wing, while Jess Ziu and Paulina Nyström led the attack.
It was an even first half that saw both teams struggle to get any clear cut chances, mostly because of impressive defending by each side.
Our best chance came when we attacked with pace down the left wing, before a ball into the box fell into the path of Sam Tierney, but the captain, deciding to take a touch first, was intercepted by the time she was able to get a hit at goal.
City take the lead
Sam Tierney forced the opening goal.
The second half started with the Foxes showing more control and attacking prowess, which was rewarded with a goal on 55 minutes.
Tierney's low ball into the box, searching for the run of Nyström, was turned in by Cowen, giving us the lead at Bramall Lane.
We continued to probe, and came close to a second when substitute Alisha Lehmann hit the upright, but Emilia Pelgander's dismissal inside the final five made for a tense ending to the fixture.
The Foxes hold on
Celebrating an opening day win.
The hosts gave it everything in the final moments and will feel unfortunate not to walk away with a point, but for Rick Passmoor's side, it was delight in South Yorkshire.
Holding out for a first clean of the season as well, the win in Sheffield is our first since a 1-0 success over Everton in January 2024.
With three points from a possible three achieved on the opening day, we now head home to face Durham at King Power Stadium next Sunday (3pm BST kick-off) - Season Tickets available now.
