It was the U’s who took all the points at King Power Stadium in Sky Bet League One, with Mark Harris (2), Mo Missanga and Jamie McDonnell finding the net.
Coming after a first league win of the season, a 2-0 success over Plymouth Argyle on Filbert Way the Tuesday before, it was especially frustrating to lose the momentum created that evening, but the nature of the defeat stung as well.
“Obviously, I’m not happy,” said Souttar, who wore the captain’s armband on Saturday. “The result speaks for itself really.
“It doesn’t matter the way you want to play if you’re not going to run and compete or win tackles, win headers, and not give yourself a chance to be in the game.

“You don’t deserve anything from the game and we certainly didn’t deserve anything from the game. Obviously at 1-0 down at half-time, you’re thinking: right okay, it’s poor [but] we played some okay stuff in the first half.
“We broke their press a couple of times, but we just couldn’t get that cutting edge. Coming out for the second half, we were just flat. It was a tough afternoon.”
Speaking immediately after the game, Australia centre-back Souttar explained that the squad will be analysing the performance in order to avoid a repeat anytime soon.
“We’ll watch the game back [on Sunday] and analyse it and go through it,” he added. “We all know it’s not good enough. I’m not going to sit here and make excuses or say this or that.
“We were out-competed today by an Oxford side who deserve the victory and we didn’t deserve anything from the game.”

Souttar wanted to thank the supporters for their backing in tough circumstances on Saturday, but was again eager to underline his frustration with the performance.
“For the ones that stayed and clapped us off, thank you,” our No.15 continued. “We didn’t deserve it. It’s up to us as a group of playing staff to put that right.
“Ultimately, we want to come here and make it exciting and play good football and create lots of chances and score goals, but if you don’t do the other side of the game, which is the bare minimum, you don’t give yourself a chance.
“[After] two decent performances, we didn’t see it coming today. It’s one we’ve all got to take on the chin. We’ve all got to stand up to it. It’s all about the reaction.
“We can here and complain, but the reaction’s got to be top from everyone. Obviously we’ll have a debrief tomorrow through the game, what we didn’t do well, and all we can do is try and put it right next weekend.”
