A second-half strike from Libbi McInnes, which took a deflection on its way into the net, opened the scoring before Paulina Nyström levelled things back up again late on for LCFC Women.

As the scores after 90 minutes ended 1-1, after winning 4-3 in the following shootout, we now sit 17th in the standings with three points from three games in the competition.

There were three changes to the City side which drew with Southampton last weekend in WSL2, with Heather Payne and Alisha Lehmann, who scored off the bench last time out, coming in for Asmita Ale and Nyström. There were also first appearances in the matchday squad for Academy duo Ella Collinson and Hannah Kirk too.

Keane saves a spot-kick

In action at Silverlake Stadium.

An even, open start to the game was disrupted by a penalty kick, awarded to the Saints after a foul from Simone Sherwood, who pulled down her attacker just inside the box.

With a good record of saving penalties, Katie Keane got across to her bottom left very quickly and, on the stretch made a great save, denying the hosts from taking the lead.

At the other end of the pitch, our best chance came just before the break when Poppy Pritchard drove into the box and attempted to chip the 'keeper, but was denied by a good save.

Deflection give Saints the lead

Southampton broke the deadlock just after the hour mark.

Out for the second half, both teams looked dangerous without causing either goalkeeper much trouble, until the 66th minute, when the hosts took a fortunate lead.

A strike from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection, wrong-footing Keane, who tried her best to scramble across the goal but couldn't stop the ball from crossing the line, despite protests with the linesman.

We pushed for a second, once again coming close through Pritchard, who forced another top save from the Southampton shot-stopper. Lehmann did find the net in the second half, but a quick check to the touchline saw her effort ruled out for offside.

Nyström scroes late before penalties win

We took two points from Silverlake Stadium on Sunday.

Heading into the final minutes at Silverlake Stadium, we were keeping the pressure on, and winning a corner invited everyone bar Keane to head into the Southampton box.

A well worked set-piece saw the delivery land at the head of Nyström at the back post, who exepertly directed it goalwards to get us back level.

With the game ending 1-1, we went to penalties for an extra point and once again Keane was the hero, saving two of the hosts' spot kicks, as Nyström, Sarah Mayling, Jessie Stapleton and finally Payne all converted to win the shootout 4-3.
