In the build-up to this next encounter, with the help of Of Fossils & Foxes co-author Dave Smith, we take a look at some of the stats behind it, and the most recent examples of flare-ups and numerical anomalies...
Previous encounters
City and Charlton have met regularly across the top two tiers of English football, producing a balanced but fiercely competitive history. The most recent league meetings came during the 2013/14 Championship season. At King Power Stadium, the Foxes earned a convincing 3-0 victory with goals from Jamie Vardy, Danny Drinkwater and David Nugent, while earlier that campaign Charlton edged a 2-1 win at The Valley.
Going further back, we were defeated 2-1 in both 2012/13 league fixtures, despite strikes in each from Chris Wood and Andy King. The sides played out a 1-1 draw in December 2007, meanwhile, with Stephen Clemence netting our only goal of the game.
In cup competition, the Foxes have enjoyed recent success. In the 2005 FA Cup Fifth Round, goals from Nikos Dabizas and Dion Dublin earned a 2-1 win at The Valley. Leicester also won a 1998 League Cup tie 2-1, thanks to a brace from Tony Cottee.
Landmark moments
There have been several unusual statistical quirks in this fixture. Despite the number of meetings, no player has ever scored a hat-trick for either side, although Cottee’s double in 1998 remains memorable.
Penalty drama has also been a feature – Steve Lynex was Leicester’s last scorer from the spot against Charlton back in 1981, while Paolo Di Canio netted for the Addicks in 2004 on the day we were relegated from the Premier League. Own goals have also played their part, with Tony Brien (1987) and Paul Mortimer (1991) among those on the wrong end of the scoresheet.
Debuts and dismissals have punctuated the history too. Matt Heath made his first Leicester appearance at The Valley in 2001, while Matty James saw red in 2013. Charlton’s Steve Brown was the last Addick dismissed in the fixture, back in 2001.
Played for both & top scorers
There are plenty of links between the two clubs. Goalkeeper Ben Hamer moved from Charlton to Leicester in 2014, while Simon Royce went the other way in 2003. The connections list also includes former players such as Chris Powell, Yann Kermorgant, Michael Morrison, Paul Konchesky, Martyn Waghorn, Ademola Lookman and Stephy Mavididi.
Notably, Yann Kermorgant scored for Charlton in each of his first three appearances against the Foxes after leaving King Power Stadium. Len Glover, Paul Went and Paul Mortimer are among the rare group to have scored for both clubs in this fixture – Mortimer managing the feat in a single match with the ‘help’ of an own goal.
In terms of outright top scorers, Keith Peacock leads the way for Charlton with five goals against City, while Rodney Fern and Alan Young are Leicester’s most prolific, each scoring three times in this head-to-head.
