We’re back on home soil after Tuesday’s trip to Southampton and it’s Chris Wilder’s improving Sheff Utd who provide our latest test.
Ahead of the game, with the help of Of Fossils & Foxes co-author Dave Smith, here’s a look at some of the historical links and stats from this fixture…
Previous Encounters
kelechi-heanacho
This is our 99th meeting with Sheff Utd – 39 of which, so far, have come in the second tier. We’ve been on the winning side 35 times overall, with a favourable recent record too. We’re on a run of seven consecutive victories over the south Yorkshire outfit – and on a 10-game unbeaten sequence.
Chris Garland and Kelechi Iheanacho are the only two Foxes who have netted post-war hat-tricks against Sheff Utd – with Danny Liddle hitting four goals in 1933/34. Jimmy Dunne, meanwhile, managed the same for the Blades in 1929/30. Dunne was a regular high scorer against the Foxes, netting a hat-trick earlier that campaign, alongside City legend Arthur Chandler in a 3-3 Filbert Street draw.
It's been a little while since Leicester have had a penalty vs. Sheff Utd – Matty Fryatt and Steve Howard being the most recent, alongside Jack Lee and David Nish. Reg Halton, Arthur Lever, David Nish and Allan Evans, meanwhile, suffered the indignity of scoring own goals for Leicester against Saturday’s opponents. Pre-war, Leicester’s Dai Jones and Percy Grosvenor both put through their own net in the same 1936/37 meeting.
We’ve had 21 post-war debutants in this fixture over the years as well, including Luke Thomas and Khanya Leshabela, while former Foxes Lilian Nalis and Keith Gillespie also made their Sheff Utd bows against Leicester.
Landmark Moments & Last Times

Perhaps the most notable Leicester-Sheff Utd encounter came in the semi-finals of the 1961 FA Cup, which required three matches to settle the tie. The first of those games attracted an enormous crowd of 52,095 at Elland Road, still the highest attendance in the fixture.
A remarkable 5-5 draw lit up Filbert Street in November 1951, before United struck five without reply in the return fixture at Bramall Lane. The Blades have twice hit Leicester for seven goals, in January 1930 and November 1952.
As we’ve said, the most recent hat-trick for Leicester in the fixture came on 14 March, 2021, when Kelechi Iheanacho struck three at King Power Stadium. United’s last came from James Beattie in April 2008.
The last direct signing made by Leicester was the loan arrival of Lee Hendrie in 2008, while the most recent player to move the other way was Hamza Choudhury on loan in January 2025.
Played For Both & Top Scorers

There’s a long list of players to have represented both sides. Those connections include Marcus Bent, Alan Birchenall, Tom Cannon, Franz Carr, Conor Coady, Brian Deane, Ritchie de Laet, Nathan Dyer, Paul Gallagher, Keith Gillespie, Dean Hammond, Lee Hendrie, Colin Hill, Harry Maguire, Joe Mattock, David Kelly, Lilian Nalis, Kyle Naughton, Richard Stearman, Luke Thomas, Harry Souttar, Rob Ullathorne and many more.
Two players, uniquely, have scored for both sides in this fixture. Deane achieved the feat for each club, while David Nish did so in far less conventional fashion.
As for the leading marksmen, Leicester City’s all-time top scorer against Sheffield United remains Arthur Chandler, who struck 12 goals in these matches. For the Blades, the great Jimmy Dunne leads the way with 11.
