Under the lights and in front of the home faithful, the Foxes will be aiming to continue their promising form on home soil, remaining unbeaten in LE2 at this early stage of 25/26. Martí Cifuentes’ side go into the clash, on the other hand, on the back of an impressive 3-1 win at Swansea before the international break.
Pompey, meanwhile, are hoping to build in the second tier, showing the organisation and energy required to settle and look upwards following their promotion from League 1 the season before last.
Ahead of Saturday’s 7:45pm BST kick-off, with the help of Of Foxes & Foxes co-author Dave Smith, we delve into the records and stories that have defined this fixture over the years…
Previous Encounters
Our last win over Pompey in a league match was also Muzzy Izzet's final Foxes appearance.

Saturday’s meeting will be the 65th between City and Portsmouth in all competitions. Of those, 26 have been in the second tier, alongside two play-off clashes. We hold the upper hand historically with 32 victories, although you do have to go back to a Premier League encounter in 2004 for our last in the league.
Goals from Paul Dickov, James Scowcroft and a Matt Taylor own goal secured a 3-1 win at Walkers Stadium (now called King Power Stadium) in that meeting.
The clubs’ more recent encounters were closely fought, with four straight Championship draws between 2011 and 2012. In the cups, we triumphed 1-0 at Fratton Park in the 1995 FA Cup Fourth Round thanks to Iwan Roberts, while a League Cup tie in 2010 saw goals from Michael Morrison and Lloyd Dyer earn a 2-1 win on the South Coast.
Landmark Moments
David Nugent played for both and scored against both.

We recorded our all-time record biggest league win in this fixture — a remarkable 10-0 triumph at Filbert Street in 1928, as Arthur Chandler scored six and Ernie Hine three. Coined the ‘six swans game’ – owing to a tale where five swans overhead were joined by a sixth just before Chandler completed his double hat-trick – the ball even burst due to our fearsome shooting at our old ground.
There have been other unforgettable encounters: the 1934 and 1949 FA Cup Semi-Finals between the clubs drew vast crowds — 66,544 at St. Andrew’s and an estimated 62,000 at Highbury — while a famous play-off semi-final in 1993 saw the Foxes overcome Pompey to reach Wembley. Iwan Roberts remains the only Leicester player to have netted a post-war hat-trick in this fixture, scoring three times in a 4-2 win at Filbert Street in 1995.
Defender Miguel Vítor made his Foxes debut against Pompey in a 2-1 League Cup win at Fratton Park in 2010, before being sent off at the same ground just three days later in the Championship rematch, a night to forget as we suffered a 6-1 reverse. Elsewhere, David Nugent – a player who represented both clubs – scored in each of the last four meetings, twice for each side.
Played For Both & Top Scorers
Yakubu scored double figures in two Premier League seasons for Pompey, later joining City on loan in 2010/11.

The list of players to have represented both City and Portsmouth over the years includes Steve Claridge, David Connolly, Richie De Laet, George Hirst, Asmir Begović, Yakubu, Diomansy Kamara, and Marko Futacs.
When it comes to the goalscoring charts in this fixture, Leicester’s Arthur Chandler leads the way with 13 goals, a total unmatched by any other Fox in meetings with Pompey. Portsmouth’s Jack Weddle sits top of their equivalent list with 10.
From bursting balls and six swans, to play-off deciders, this is a fixture which has often brought intrigue. As Leicester welcome Portsmouth back to Filbert Way, another memorable evening could be about to unfold.
