Leicester City are the hosts at King Power Stadium for a 4:30pm BST kick-off on Sunday.
With over a century of league and cup encounters behind us, the two sides have shared many tightly contested and memorable fixtures over the years, 48 coming in the second tier.
Ahead of Sunday’s clash – the continuation of a fixture which dates back to the reign of Queen Victoria – we take a look at the facts and figures which tell that story.
Long-standing opponents
There have been 112 previous meetings between the Foxes and the Owls across all competitions. The balance is almost perfectly even – Wednesday have 42 wins to City’s 41, with 29 draws. Goals scored in the fixture are separated by just one as well: 169 for Wednesday, 168 for Leicester.
The most recent Championship clashes (2023/24) saw us claim four points. A 1-1 draw at Hillsborough in November was followed by a 2-0 win at King Power Stadium in February, with goals from Abdul Fatawu and Jamie Vardy.
Fatawu made his mark by scoring in both meetings that season. It mirrored a similar contribution from Anthony Knockaert in the 2013/14 campaign, when he also netted in each game against Wednesday.
By the numbers
Only two red cards have been shown in this fixture post-war – Paddy McCarthy for Leicester in 2006 and Dejan Stefanović for Wednesday in 1997.
Since the Second World War, 15 players have made their Leicester debut against Wednesday, including Matty Fryatt in 2006. Among them are four named Ian or Iain: McNeill, King, Marshall and Hume.
In 1992, Wednesday recorded the biggest win in the fixture with a 7-1 League Cup victory. City’s highest tally in a single match is six, a figure we’ve achieved twice.
Only two post-war hat-tricks have been scored, mind you – Imre Varadi for Wednesday in 1984 and Steve Moran for City in 1987. Penalties have been rare though: just six successful conversions between the two clubs since the war. The last Foxes penalty came via David Nish in 1970.
Connections to both
While not many players have represented both clubs, Gary Taylor-Fletcher was the last to move from Leicester to Wednesday, joining the Owls on loan in 2014. Interestingly, he made his City debut against Blackpool – the same club he debuted for against Leicester earlier in his career.
Gary Megson, on the other hand, has links to both sides too, having managed each and scored for Wednesday in previous meetings during his playing days.
Record holders
City’s leading goalscorer in this fixture is Arthur Chandler with 13 goals, while Jack Ball leads the way for Wednesday with 11. The fixture's highest attendance remains 39,127, recorded during an FA Cup tie at Hillsborough in 1924.
