Aiming to back up our 2-1 victory over Derby County three days earlier, and avenge the defeat in the reverse fixture against the Blades, it’s a 5:30pm GMT kick-off in south Yorkshire. Ahead of this encounter, the 100th between the sides, we take a dive into some of the numbers and stories behind the fixture from years gone by, with the help of Of Fossils & Foxes co-author Dave Smith.
Previous Encounters
Riyad Mahrez celebrates after setting up Jamie Vardy to make it 1-0 during the FA Cup Fifth Round tie in February 2018.
Since the first took place all the way back in the 1899/00 season, all 99 meetings have been played out in the top two divisions of English football.
We have enjoyed the upper hand overall, recording 35 victories, with 32 wins for the Blades and another 32 ending in draws.
Recent history has also favoured the Foxes, winning four of the last five league encounters, including a 5-0 Premier League success in March 2021. City also won the last FA Cup and League Cup clashes, in 2018 and 2017 respectively.
However, the most recent clash earlier this season – the first time the pair had met in over four years – ended in a 3-2 away victory for Chris Wilder’s men.
Landmark Moments & Last Times
A hat-trick for the Nigerian forward on Filbert Way.
Kelechi Iheanacho scored a hat-trick in that previously mentioned 5-0 victory, just the second post-war treble from a Foxes perspective after Chris Garland’s. James Beattie is the only Blade to score three in this fixture, meanwhile.
There have been plenty of converted penalties, the last City one by Steve Howard, following on from Matty Fryatt, David Nish and Jack Lee. United’s Alan Woofward has three of his own, with Fred Furniss notching two converted spot-kicks, alongside Ian Benjamin. Mitch Ward, Andy Gray and Steve Kabba all scored from the spot, too.
From the heroes to those involved in more unfortunate events, four Leicester players have scored own goals post-war, although not since 1989, including Reg Halton, Arthur Lever, David Nish and most recently, Allan Evans. As for Sheffield United, only Ethan Ampadu has befallen that fate, four years ago, in the 5-0 scoreline on Filbert Way.
No Blades have ever been sent off in the fixture, though four red cards have been handed out to City players over the years, including Patrick Kisnorbo’s, which was later rescinded. Everton Carr, Callum Davidson and Keith Gillespie were all given their marching orders too, the latter against his future club.
Played For Both & Top Scorers
Lee Hendrie went out on loan to City from the Blades.
The last transfers between both clubs have been loan deals, midfielder Lee Hendrie making the temporary move to King Power Stadium in 2008 and Hamza Choudhury going the other way at the start of the year, before returning here for 25/26.
The list of players to have represented both clubs is extensive, including other current Foxes such as Luke Thomas and Harry Souttar, as well as current United forward Tom Cannon.
Despite the sheer volume of shared alumni, scoring for both clubs has been a far rarer feat. Brian Deane remains the only player to have conventionally found the net for both sides in this fixture, although David Nish has also done so less conventionally.
City legend Arthur Chandler (12) and Sheffield United’s Jimmy Dunne (11) are the leading goalscorers in fixtures between the clubs, meanwhile.
