The young winger arrived over the weekend, watching on during our final pre-season fixture of the summer against Genoa, as the new campaign comes into view.

Keen to play his part as soon as possible, Watson has experience of playing on Filbert Way and hopes the lads in the squad can help him settle in quickly, with 26/27 just around the corner.

“I’m delighted to be here,” the 20-year-old told us during his first interview here. “I’ve been at Seagrave and I was really impressed with the training ground and then coming to the stadium I’m as impressed here, so I’m just buzzing to get started now.

“It definitely feels a lot more real now. I played here last year but coming to this ground just reminds me of the Leicester team that was winning the Premier League when I was growing up. It does really excite me.

“There’s a couple of experienced lads who have been added in Conor [Chaplin] and Alex [McCarthy] the ‘keeper, and then a few lads like Hamza [Choudhury] who was already here. I know Ben [Nelson] from England and Bade [Aluko] briefly with England. I’ve played against Hamza in the play-off final, so I know him.”

An injury initially restricted his minutes last term, playing only a handful of Premier League minutes for parent club Brighton, before a loan move to Millwall in the Championship was equally as frustrating, ending in play-off defeat.

Keen to put those disappointments behind him, the England youth international continued: “I had a tricky year last year coming off the back of the play-offs with Sunderland (when he scored at Wembley to help the Black Cats to the Premier League), it was a really good year and then things didn’t really go the way I wanted.

“I had a couple of injuries and then not enough minutes last year, which was the main reason, but I know if I get the right amount of starts and minutes, then goals, assists and good performances will come.

“That was the main pull (getting football under his belt), apart from the size of the Club and the Manager. Coming here, I think I can really make an impact and hopefully make the position mine.”

Joining Russell Martin’s Foxes, the style of play the Manager implements tallies up with the midfielder’s own game, and it’s a major reason why he decided to make the move, believing he can make key contributions during our Sky Bet League One campaign.

On the Manager’s pull, Watson added: “I met him in Brighton and then I’ve spoken to him at the training ground and I was really impressed. He’s really clear on his ideas. You’ll be able to tell [in the way we set up] but I knew that from watching him and speaking to players. He’s another massive reason why I came.

“The ball’s not in the air much, it’s going to be possession-based. As a forward, that’s a dream come true. In this league this year, it’s going to be tough, we’re going to have to break teams down, but there’s going to be so many chances created.

“It’s all about goals, assists and getting as many wins as we can. I’m a left winger who can play off the right but I like the left the most. I’m direct and like to attack my defender one-vs-one.

“One part of my game which I’d like to improve is those scrappy goals. Hopefully with my height I can get a few of those this year. I think we’re going to create a lot of chances so it’s really going to suit me.”
