City's Under-18s beat West Ham United 6-3 last weekend
Lorenz Hutchinson scored a hat-trick in the win
Jeremy Monga played an hour at Little Heath Sports Ground
Coach Adam Barradell gave an update on the team's progress
It’s been a testing season for the young Foxes, who have had to deal with tough losses on their road of development, but things have started to turn a corner, collecting six points from a possible 12 in recent weeks.
That included a convincing 6-3 victory over the Hammers, and Barradell was happy to see the side get their rewards for an excellent performance. “We always felt that, over the last couple of months, results like this would come,” the coach stated. “The last win a couple of weeks ago against West Brom was good and then we scored six at the weekend.
“What’s really pleasing to see is that we had four Under-16s starting the game, so the lads coming through the group are doing so well.
A hat-trick for Lorenz Hutchinson last time out.
“A lot of the lads are now with the Under-21s so it’s been a real transitional year for us, but all credit to the work going into the youth development phase because the lads that came in and played were excellent.
“It was a tough game, with a tight and tough pitch to play on, so the boys had to adapt and find a new way of playing which they did really well.”
With Jake Evans and Jeremy Monga in the spotlight and their efforts rewarded with exposure in the First Team, Barradell was delighted to see another young forward, Lorenz Hutchinson, show his worth.
“I’m delighted for Lorenz [Hutchinson],” the coach continued. “He’s been putting in some great work in training and the staff have worked well with him individually so to come out with a hat-trick at the weekend was great.
“Hopefully he can keep that going now until the end of the season. He’s got some really strong attributes with his pace and power, but we’ve got plenty of excellent players coming through the system.
“We’d love to have all the Under-18s with us and winning each week, but to see them push through, like Jake Evans who is top scorer in PL2, is fantastic to see and that’s what we’re here to do.”
The Academy continues to work at full strength says Barradell.
Although sitting 10th in the league, with 15 points from 15 games, the coach admitted that success has come from player development this season, with an abundance of individuals playing above their age groups with the Under-21s.
Confirming that a selection of Under-15s will be present in their next U18 Premier League clash away at Norwich City, the Academy coach understands that they must also remain competitive in games.
“It’s a collective effort,” Barradell added. “We’ve got great staff here that get through to the players. Leon [McSweeney] and I are lucky that we’re getting players through with such good quality.
“Our job is polishing them off and sending them on. But you’ll start to see this more, because against Norwich City next week, we’ll have some Under-15s in and around our squad so it’s a real good trend happening at the moment.
“On the other hand, we’ve still got to be competitive and that’s the challenge for me as a coach as at times this year we have and at other times we’ve fallen short. We’re always working hard to have both at the Academy.”
