Appointed as the Foxes’ new Manager on Friday, he will take charge of his new club for the first time on Tuesday as West Ham United visit King Power Stadium. Having watched City’s defeat at Brentford on Saturday from the stands, van Nistelrooy is aware of the challenge which awaits him, but that does not dampen his excitement.
Vastly experienced as a player, the 48-year-old has progressed through the coaching levels in the Netherlands to lead PSV Eindhoven to two trophies in a single season, before also steadying the ship at Manchester United over a four-game caretaker spell this term. While eager to implement his own playing style on Leicester, van Nistelrooy was eager to explain that no ideals will come at the expense of the pursuit for top-flight points.
“The expectations are clear,” he told reporters on Monday. “They’re not easy, but they’re clear. We face that challenge, to maintain and play in the Premier League. That’s the big target for us, for everybody, to achieve that. I’m thinking of one thing before any game that I prepare and that’s winning it.

“When you play top teams in the Premier League, or mid teams, or lower ranked teams, it sometimes requires a different approach. The style of play is adjusted on [the question]: how can we win it? I’m not the romantic type of manager that puts style in front of results. I love style, I love having the ball, pressing the team high, because you have more of the ball... but we’re facing opponents here. We’re not the dominant side in the league, but we want to win.”
Building foundations will be key, the Dutchman says, to create a team which can be competitive and start to look upwards in the Premier League table. He also elaborated on the discussions he had with the Club’s leadership before taking the role.
“Sunday was the first time that I was here, I met the players and staff,” he added. “I had a meeting with the players. It was the first thing to address, the situation that we’re in and the challenge that we’re facing, and what’s necessary to get out of that situation.
It was a busy press conference for Ruud van Nistelrooy's pre-West Ham United preview.

“With the run of results over the last weeks, and the Brentford game, it’s about reacting. [It’s about giving] clarity about how we’re going to do things. In two days, it’s difficult to make a lot of changes, but we’ve started to make the changes we think are necessary in the style of play, in training, and in the structure of the team. Little by little, it’s time to build the foundations of a highly motivated, fit team, that can compete in this league.
“To be managing this club and this group of players and representing Leicester in the Premier League… for me, I’m excited and proud to get the opportunity. The conversations I had when I spoke to the owner and the director, they were very good conversations. They were important to get to know each other and get the ideas together. We’re very excited to start working together.”
