An assist for Will Alves in Cardiff City's Sky Bet Championship victory
Hamza Choudhury and Ben Nelson also play in second-tier successes
Wanya Marçal returns from injury with minutes for Brandon Cover and Arjan Raikhy
Oliver Ewing and Ben Grist are both involved in non-league action
The on-loan Foxes winger came off the bench in the 61st minute of the Ewood Park contest, crossing for fellow substitute Yakou Méïté to head home the winner with just over a quarter of an hour to play and crucially move the Bluebirds out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone by one point, now positioned 21st after a first victory in four.
Cardiff bounced back from their defeat to Luton.
Alves’ sixth league appearance for the Welsh club since his January move, having started the 2-1 defeat to Luton Town in midweek, the 19-year-old will no doubt be hungry for more minutes when Omer Riza’s men host Sheffield Wednesday after linking up with the England Elite League Squad for matches against Portugal and Switzerland.
Another Foxes player in that young Lions squad is defender Ben Nelson, fresh from his adopted side Oxford United maintaining a clean sheet during their 1-0 home win over Watford at the weekend, as the 21-year-old played 90 minutes.
Back in the fold after injury, the centre-back also made a substitute appearance in the second half of a 2-1 defeat to Hull City three days prior, with an away trip to Middlesbrough on the horizon next Saturday (3pm kick-off) for the 18th-placed U’s.
Battling for the ball against Watford.
Moving to the top end of the Championship, midfielder Hamza Choudhury helped Sheffield United to secure bragging rights in the Steel City derby, defeating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Hillsborough on Sunday.
Remaining on course for automatic promotion, the Blades are now level on points with league leaders Leeds United having drawn 1-1 with Bristol City five days earlier – another game Choudhury played 90 minutes in.
Away on international duty with Bangladesh this week, the 27-year-old will resume the title fight with a match against Coventry City at Bramall Lane next Friday night (8pm kick-off).
Over in the Netherlands, Wanya Marçal returned from injury to play the final 33 minutes of De Graafschap’s 2-0 success over TOP Oss in Eerste Divisie. The Portuguese attacker hadn’t featured since December and his next opportunity to take to the field comes on Saturday when taking on MVV (5:45pm kick-off).
There were 13 minutes of Sky Bet League 2 action for Brandon Cover as Fleetwood Town lost 3-0 to Colchester United on Saturday, slipping into the bottom half of the table as a result. The Cod Army host relegation-threatened Tranmere Rovers at Highbury Stadium this weekend.
In the Vanarama National League, meanwhile, Arjan Raikhy was introduced from the bench to see out a 3-1 victory for Tamworth over Dagenham & Redbridge last time out. It was the centre midfielder’s sixth appearance for the Lambs, who sit 11th in the table and head to Gateshead on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
Fellow midfielder Oliver Ewing continued his run of starts and wins for Buxton in National League North, playing throughout successive victories over Spennymoor Town and Brackley respectively. King’s Lynn Town are next up on Saturday (3pm kick-off) as the Derbyshire-based outfit remain in the hunt for a play-off spot.
Ben Grist was involved in Worksop Town’s 3-1 success at home to Hyde Town, keeping the Tigers second in Northern Premier League Premier Division with a trip to Rylands coming up on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
North of the border, Tom Wilson-Brown was an unused substitute in Kilmarnock’s 1-1 draw with Hibernian and is awaiting his debut for the Scottish Premiership club. Chris Popov, meanwhile, has not featured for Barrow recently but is now away with Wales' Under-21s during the international break.
