They advanced into the last-32 with a third-placed finish in Group L
Having qualified from Group D, finishing as runners up with four points, Souttar and the Socceroos met Egypt in Dallas on Friday evening. The Leicester City centre-back has been virtually ever-present for his country at the tournament, also wearing the captain’s armband, and he was involved in much of the drama on Friday.
A powerful finish from an unmarked Emam Ashour put Egypt in front just 13 minutes into the contest. Although many of the 70,000 crowd thought it was Souttar who levelled for Australia 10 minutes into the second half, it was in fact Egypt defender Mohamed Hany who diverted Aiden O'Neill's free-kick past his own goalkeeper.
That set-up extra-time and then penalties, with Souttar among the Australian spot-kick takers to miss the target, at the end of a tournament where he has impressed many with his performances, especially having only recently returned from a long-term injury.
Later on, into the early hours of Saturday UK time, Fatawu came off the bench in the 62nd minute of Ghana’s 1-0 reverse to Colombia, replacing Iñaki Williams. Jhon Arias' first-half goal was the difference in Kansas City, ending Ghana’s World Cup campaign, which included finishing as one of the best-placed third-placed sides in Group L, behind England and Croatia. Fatawu, meanwhile, has made a positive impact in many of his nation's fixtures this summer, featuring in all four games.
