- Slimani was a late substitute during the triumph in Egypt’s capital

Having scored against Tanzania in the group stages, Slimani was called upon late on to ensure the Desert Foxes held on to their slender advantage in Cairo.

Algeria took the lead when Baghdad Bounedjah found the net after only two minutes, and that proved to be enough for Djamel Belmadi’s men, who lifted the AFCON trophy for the first time since 1990.

Slimani, 31, was an 89th-minute substitute in the triumph at Cairo International Stadium, where Algeria beat Wilfred Ndidi’s Nigeria in the semi-final last weekend.
