Wes Morgan replied to Lewis Alessandra’s early effort before goals from Hamza Choudhury, Demarai Gray and Islam Slimani sealed the victory.

Following a first triumph of pre-season, the Leicester boss applauded his side’s spirited performance over the 90 minutes.

“I think it was important to start this pre-season with a good game,” Puel told LCFC TV. “It was interesting, a lot of things, like good pressing. It was a good rhythm for the first game, with good opponents who were better physically than us.

We know it’s difficult this pre-season with all the international players. It’s difficult to keep the good intensity, focus and concentration.

“We gave a good response together with good play between the lines and great goals with quality. I like the spirit of the team, of the squad, for all of the 90 minutes. It’s important now to continue this work.”

Puel says his players will be boosted by their performance against the Magpies, with Akhisarspor next up on Wednesday 25 July (5pm kick-off BST) at Stadion Villach Lind, Austria.

“It’s a good thing to take confidence for all these players,” he added. “We know it’s difficult this pre-season with all the international players. It’s difficult to keep the good intensity, focus and concentration.

Islam Slimani thanks Leonardo Ulloa after converting the Argentine's pass.

"It was a good momentum together and now it’s important to continue. Individual performances are good. Some players were better because there are differences in their physical [condition] but I am happy all of the play.

“I think we need to continue this work with a good intensity, focus and concentration – on set-pieces and different details.

“Step by step, we will correct all the problems. For example, in this game, we conceded the first goal. For me, it’s not possible to concede this goal because it’s a mistake and we have to correct the different details.”
