Jake Evans’ brace - one a fine half-volley, the other a well-taken penalty - wasn’t enough for the young Foxes, who were pulled back by Kaino Dyer before of half-time, while a Shim Mheuka header was followed up by Kobe Barbour's late winner for the visitors.
A competition which holds significant prestige in the Academy programme, City were hosting the same opponent which knocked them out at this stage last season. The 2024/25 campaign, though, has been one of promise for the side coached by Adam Barradell, with several of their stars already climbing the ranks into the Under-21s.

Reggie Walsh's header over the bar, mind you, was an early warning from the visitors, regular contenders to win the Youth Cup outright. Leonardo Cardoso also went close in the 13th minute, only denied an opener in north Leicestershire by a brave Louis Paige block.
Olutayo Subuloye’s cross was then nodded over again by Walsh as the Blues looked to turn the screw. City, though, were a match for Chelsea in the middle and they broke through the lines in the 27th minute, with Evans chesting down a high ball in the area and smashing it, on the half-volley, past Hudson Sands into the roof of the net.

Jeremy Monga, on the other hand, was a menace as well, flashing a fierce drive across the box and forcing Sands into a solid snapshot save. It got better for the young Foxes with six minutes of the first half to play, as Landon Emenalo committed a foul in the 18-yard box, gifting Leicester a spot-kick at LCFC Training Ground.
Evans stepped up to take it, calmly dispatching the penalty into the bottom right corner, sending Sands the wrong way. Chelsea, however, are renowned for the quality of their academy sides and showed why, first getting one back before the interval. Dyer’s tidy finish, latching onto a Mheuka through-ball, got the comeback started.

Some heroic defending was required in the second half, with Olabade Aluko doing especially well to thwart Mheuka on one testing occasion. Visiting substitute Barbour also lashed a powerful half-volley, on the turn, over the crossbar for Chelsea just after the hour-mark.
City’s lead was gone, though, in the latter stages as Dyer’s looping cross was diverted to the back of the net via Mheuka’s head. Evans did have a chance to complete his hat-trick and win it for Leicester, but he sent his effort wide from the left side of the box moments later.
With two minutes of normal time to go, it was 3-2 as Cardoso forced a good stop from home ‘keeper Jake Donohue, but there was nothing he could do to prevent Barbour from following up on the rebound, with a composed side-footed finish, to seal a dramatic late victory.
Although the Youth Cup campaign ends in the third round, the young Foxes will be back in U18 Premier League action in the New Year, heading to Norwich City on Saturday 11 January (1pm GMT kick-off).
