Coming close to taking something from home games against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, as well as in the last-gasp defeat at Everton, there have been indications that the Foxes are not far away from a positive result, according to the versatile defender. “I think it’s important to give ourselves some context on what we’re doing,” the 23-year-old expressed to the media on Thursday. “We know how difficult the league is and results don’t always go the way you want.
“We’re all aware it’s a league where results can come out of nowhere. It helps us with confidence to belief in what we’re doing and that it is getting there. There’s an element that we remain realistic.
“Ultimately, we do need to get points on the board, but as Lydia [Bedford] has alluded to, the stats are going in the right direction. Hopefully we can start to turn our performances into results and then we’ll be on to a better run.
“You’ve got to stick to the process and trust our game plan and that’s what we’re setting out to do. For us, we need to be defensively solid and resilient and work hard as a team, together.
“The big thing we’ve been working on this week is just trying to be a bit more confident in possession and trust that we can play at this level.”
Sitting 12th in the Barclays Women’s Super League table after matchday four is not an unfamiliar situation for Leicester, who hauled themselves to safety last term with four victories in the second half of the campaign, following Lydia Bedford's appointment as manager. Nevertheless, it is not where Tierney and her team-mates wanted to be at this stage and have had to pick themselves up from losing 4-0 at Manchester City last weekend. She explained: “It’s a difficult position for any team to be in. What we’ve learnt from last year is that we just can’t sit and well on performances that have just gone by because games come thick and fast in this league, and you don’t really get much time to dwell.
“Ultimately, it’s about learning. We take the first two days after to reflect on what happened in the game, but then it’s really about turning our mindset, starting to focus and keeping our sights firmly set on the next game.
“We’ve got a good group with different levels of experiences. A good thing we have in the team is that players can recognise when to pick up the mood at different times. It’s not all on one player to bring us together.
“We just try and stay positive and look to play to each other’s strengths. We have high standards, so we have to realise the position that we’re in. It’s having the balance between working hard but enjoying it at the same time.”
Sunday’s visitors have begun the season in top form, winning all three of their opening WSL fixtures without conceding a goal. Marc Skinner’s side also netted 10 times and have plenty of attacking firepower in their ranks.
“They are flying and rightly so,” the former Sheffield United centre-back assessed. “If you look at their previous seasons, they’ve probably been a little bit disappointed not to finish higher. The quality of players they have is incredible and the style of play they are trying to play.
“They’ve managed to turn results into wins. They are going to be a tough side - definitely very attacking. A lot of pace in wide areas. Ultimately, for me, it’s the same as any game, it’s 11 vs. 11 on the day and it’s about winning your individual battles and hopefully we can get a result.”
