- Kirstie Levell catches up with LCFC TV to discuss her return from injury and pre-season- The former Everton goalkeeper missed much of last season with a knee issue- Levell can't wait to adorn the gloves for LCFC Women once again in the WSL next term- She also provides an insight into pre-season and the Club's ambitions for 2022/23
The winner of the Golden Glove in 2020/21 as the Foxes lifted the Barclays Women's Championship title – sharing the honour with Megan Borthwick (Durham) and Fran Kitching (Sheffield United) – Levell's season was cruelly cut short by a knee injury last November.
The former Everton shot-stopper, 25, is now back for City, though, and is hoping to pick up where she left off in the Club's colours. LCFC Women's second Barclays Women's Super League campaign begins away at Everton over the weekend of 10/11 September.
"I’m really excited," Levell told LCFC TV. "As you all know, I’ve had quite a substantial amount of time on the sidelines. It’s been frustrating to not be as involved as I would have liked to have been. I’ve been really proud of how all the girls came out of the season towards the end.
"Obviously, when you’re going through a relegation battle, there’s not much you can do other than support the girls and it can be quite frustrating. I’m just really excited to get going. I only got to wear a few pairs of gloves last season, I had a lot of fresh ones sitting and waiting in the cupboard!
"It was nice to put a new pair on, come back out, and learn the basics of goalkeeping again. Sometimes it feels like you have to start over. For me, it was just more the demands of the goalkeeping sessions. I definitely forgot how hard they were!
"These 10 weeks will put all three of us goalkeepers into a really good set-up."
LCFC Women have completed the signings of Josie Green, Aileen Whelan and Erin Simon this summer, while manager Lydia Bedford also agreed a new deal. The Foxes returned to Belvoir Drive earlier this month for pre-season and those facilities, plus the quality in the squad, give Level confidence.
"We know how lucky we are to be in facility like this, just for us women as well," she explained. "Each day we come in, we know we’ve got brilliant pitches, a brilliant gym, facilities for recovery and things like that… it’s definitely aided my recovery and helped me.
"It’s made me feel more confident actually in terms of knowing the resources are there. During pre-season, we’ve got a long build-in to things and, if we put ourselves in the best position physically as well as mentally, why can’t we go on to do good things this season and build from last season?"
