- LCFC Women have won three games in all competitions so far this season- City have seven points in the Barclays Women's Super League- The Foxes won their opening group stage game in the Continental Tyres League Cup- Leicester travel to Liverpool on Sunday 5 November for a 3pm BST kick-off
Leicester's 2023/24 season is well up and running now as they sit in a comfortable fifth place in the Barclays Women's Super League, with seven points already, and are top of Group B in the Continental Tyres League Cup after an opening 2-1 win over Liverpool at Pirelli Stadium. After taking a couple of seasons to acclimatise to England's top division, City are enjoying their best start to a WSL campaign with seven points from their first four games, a record which took until March to achieve last term, as Manager Willie Kirk shows his determination to abolish the 'little Leicester' perspective. The season started in remarkable fashion, away at Ashton Gate as City beat newly-promoted Bristol City 4-2 on the opening day. It was the hosts who took the lead in that game through former Fox Carrie Jones, but a left-footed wonder strike from debutant and former Robins' midfielder Aimee Palmer brought the scores level before half-time. In the second half, there were even more debut goals, as Finnish forward Jutta Rantala directed Shannon O'Brien's shot goalwards, and netted another following a short cross from Deanne Rose, either side of a header from striker Lena Petermann. With three points to their name, the winning streak continued for Leicester when they welcomed Everton to King Power Stadium a week later for a first home game of the season. A defining point came just before half-time when the Toffees were awarded a penalty, but as Justine Vanhaevermaet stepped up, 'keeper Janina Leitzig dived the right way to make the save. She then got back up quickly to save the rebound, before Aileen Whelan was finally able to turn the ball away from danger. The second half saw the only goal of the game as Petermann, who joined the Club from Montpellier in the summer, made it two in two, as she ran onto Sam Tierney's pass and finished calmly past Emily Ramsey. After that, attention turned to the League Cup where Leicester took on Liverpool, who also headed into the fixture unbeaten, at Pirelli Stadium in the opening game of Group B. A free-kick from Palmer was cancelled out by former City player Natasha Flint, but a first goal of the season for Welsh forward Hannah Cain, who rounded off a fantastic team move, ensured victory for the hosts. With three wins from three, the Foxes headed north to Leigh Sports Village for what would be their biggest challenge so far, when they took on Manchester United, a side who were in the midst of a UEFA Women's Champions League battle with Paris Saint-Germain. Keeping the scores level at half-time, it was captain Whelan who broke the deadlock, when a Courtney Nevin free-kick fell to the skipper at the back post and she fired the ball low under Mary Earps. But moments later, Maya Le Tissier headed home from a corner to brings the Red Devils back level. After 10 agonising minutes of added time, the referee's whistle blew as City took their first point from the Manchester side, keeping their impressive start to the campaign going, and their unbeaten streak intact.
Unfortunately, that streak was most recently erased when Manchester City beat Leicester 1-0 on Filbert Way. An early goal from Lioness Chloe Kelly was enough to ensure the Citizens' victory, but it was a spirited performance nonetheless from Kirk's side, who were unlucky not to take anything from the game. Despite the loss, this has been the best start to a top-flight season that Leicester have accomplished, and after a busy summer, which saw nine new signings arrive through the doors at Belvoir Drive, there is definitely a different Leicester side on show for the fans this season, as they start to look higher up the table.
