- The Club's Under-23s are on a roll this season, says Development Squad manager Steve Beaglehole- Leicester City are third in Premier League 2 following a 2-1 win at leaders Liverpool over the past weekend- Beaglehole's side are currently on a seven game unbeaten run, winning six of those in all competitions- Loan stars Harvey Barnes, Elliott Moore and Callum Elder are also a source of pride for Beaglehole
While the Club’s Academy outfit, shepherded by Under-18s manager Trevor Peake, sit second in their own league, the Under-23s are currently third in Premier League 2 following a 2-1 success at Liverpool.
The Foxes are unbeaten in seven outings and have already overcome Everton, West Ham United, Chelsea, Hertha Berlin, Carlisle United, Barnsley, Swansea City and the Reds this term.
Reflecting on their start to the 2017/18 season, Beaglehole said: “I am so thrilled. It was a difficult game [at Liverpool], which we started well. We played magnificently against a very, very good side.
“It makes you feel what a great job it is to have when you have a great group like this. When you work on things as a coach and the players do it well, it’s really rewarding.
“All the lads, the ones on the bench too, they were fantastic. They got behind the team and you saw how much it means on the bench when we scored.
“We’ve got something special here. I’ve been here a long time and I have to say this is one of my biggest highlights. The work ethic was phenomenal. We played really, really well.”
Beaglehole says the performances of his Under-23s crop this term makes all the hard work conducted behind the scenes feel all the more rewarding.
The progression of his players has been swift in the past six months with City going from an outfit who had to battle to secure their top flight status in May to riding high at the top of PL2.
“I have always said winning is important at this level,” he added. “It gives you confidence to bring players on. If you’re winning games then it proves that you have good players.
“It gives me great pleasure seeing a player come through and compete for places. I delight in seeing them develop, seeing them come through and make progress.”
With the likes of Harvey Barnes, Elliott Moore and Callum Elder all impressing out on loan this season, Beaglehole says their success has also been the source of great satisfaction at Belvoir Drive.
Barnes struck from 30 yards for Barnsley on Saturday during a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday while Moore featured during a 1-0 victory for OH Leuven against Union Saint Gilloise.
Elder, on the other hand, has also been key for Wigan Athletic as they look to close the gap on Shrewsbury Town at the top of the Sky Bet League 1 table.
“We saw Harvey scoring a phenomenal goal at Hillsborough for Barnsley,” Beaglehole continued. “Leuven, too, are joint-top in Belgium and kept a clean sheet with Elliott in the side.
“Callum is helping Wigan stay at the top in League 1 too. That’s three good players out on loan and we have Ben Chilwell in the first team here too.
“It’s a really good time. The Under-18s, like ourselves, are doing really well. We’ve been around a long, long time and we come to places like this, roll our sleeves up and leave everything out there.
“For the most part this season, we’ve been fantastic. It must be so pleasing for the owners, who have put their money into the Academy, to see the fruits of that investment.”
