- LCFC Women secured qualification into the last eight of the Continental Tyres League Cup for the very first time- The trip to Birmingham City finished goalless in normal time before the Foxes won a penalty shootout 6-5 to top the group - A delighted Jonathan Morgan spoke to LCFC TV after the final whistle, praising the team's efforts against a WSL outfit- He felt it was a deserved outcome on the balance of play, with City going close to winning in normal time, before their spot kick heroics
Both teams went into the Continental Tyres League Cup group game knowing that a win would see them through to the quarter-finals at the expense of the other side, having both won their opening fixture.
The Foxes matched their Barclays FA Women's Super League hosts for 90 minutes, before triumphing 6-5 in the shootout, with Aimee Everett scoring the winning spot-kick after Kirstie Levell had saved a penalty in normal time.
Morgan told LCFC TV that the team were rewarded for their hard graft at Damson Park, remaining unbeaten in five games and keeping a second straight clean sheet, as well as taking home two group stage points to secure qualification.
He said: "I'm delighted, I said to the girls at the beginning of the game, the only way we're going to have a chance today is if we matched Birmingham's work rate, ethic and heart.
"We know how Birmingham have been doing really well in the WSL. Carla [Ward] has obviously set them up really tough to break down and we just knew that we had to match them from that point of view first, which I think we did.
"I'm so proud of the girls, so proud of the performance today, because it was, until the very end, a gritty performance with some good football as well.
"And obviously you have to give Kirstie [Levell] a special shoutout today because she was brilliant in both big moments in the game and in the penalty shootout."
Morgan felt the Foxes could have won the game in normal time if they had been more potent in front of goal, failing to find the net despite creating a series of opportunities, but he was just pleased to eventually overcome a top flight side, and most importantly, progress into the knockout stages.
"Every manager will always come out with a degree of bias to their players in the game," he admitted. "But I think, obviously, people watching over this game [would say] we had the clearer cut chances.
"I think we opened them up in the areas that we expected to, I think we just weren't as clinical as we'd like to be today. We could have had two or three goals in all honesty.
"I'm sure Birmingham would say the same things from their point of view as well, but we definitely had the better of the game today and were the worthy winners.
"I think all the players have been working so hard and with Kirstie Levell in particular, you can see that we've been absolutely putting her through her paces, just so she could come out with a performance like today."
Morgan opted to name an unchanged team from the one that comfortably saw off London Bees on Sunday, demonstrating the faith he has in the current starting XI.
The LCFC Women's manager believes Wednesday's result just shows how far the team have progressed this season, to top their Conti Cup group and remain unbeaten in the process.
"I just felt that we have a bit of momentum at the moment with the players that are starting and we had an opportunity to get through to the quarter-finals, so we really wanted to make sure that we could.
"I could have started a number of players today and we still would have put on that showing, but obviously at the minute the girls have got this shirt and it's for the other people to try to take it off them.
"Last year, we were in the group of death, we had Manchester City, Manchester United and Everton and obviously it was a very, very different experience for us, a massive learning curve.
"This year, to have WSL opposition, the likes of Birmingham and obviously Blackburn, who are a very strong Championship team this year, we're delighted that we've come out on top and that we've shown our ability."
