- LCFC Women are through to the last eight of the Continental Tyres League Cup following a 6-5 shootout victory over Birmingham City- The game between Group E's top two finished goalless after 90 minutes, with the Foxes needing to win on penalties to finish first and qualify- Goalkeeper Kirstie Levell was delighted with the team's performance as they made history by progressing for the first time- She saved a penalty in normal time, while all six of Leicester's shootout spot-kicks were scored, including Aimee Everett's winner
The Foxes maintained top spot in Group E, qualifying for the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time by drawing 0-0 with Birmingham City and winning the subsequent penalty shootout 6-5 for an extra bonus point. The Leicester 'keeper talked up Wednesday's performance against top flight opposition, which came just three days after a third consecutive league victory over London Bees. "We're very happy," a beaming Levell commented after the game. "I think Jonathan [Morgan] told us at the beginning of the week if we were to get through, we've made history already.
"The team were already excited. We knew what Birmingham are like and obviously, we're thrilled to be through to the next round. We're exciting to see who we have and, yes, we'll take each game as it comes.
"We knew when we came here it was going to be a battle. Birmingham are always a very together team, a tough team to play against, but I think we showed our togetherness and we have gelled together really well."
City's shot-stopper kept out a first half penalty and produced what manager Jonathan Morgan described as an all-round "brilliant performance" before the Foxes' shootout heroics.
The 23-year-old said she was just happy to contribute and help the team to progress further in the competition.
"I know a few of the girls from Birmingham and played in a team with Mollie Green before," Levell revealed. "I can't let friends score in me, of course!
"So, I just picked a side, went for the power and had my dad in the back of my head saying 'just throw yourself at it' when we're watching the men's game.
"They know they have to be confident when it comes to penalties and I'm just happy it didn't get down to me having to take the final one!
"That would have been a bit of pressure, but gutting I didn't get a hand to a few, but as we say, we've done well in the game and we're very happy with that."
Before Leicester find out who their quarter-final opponents will be, attention turns to Sunday's return to FA Women's Championship action versus Charlton Athletic (2pm kick-off GMT), when they will be hoping to add to their seasonal tally.
Levell added: "I think we had quite a few fair chances (against Birmingham). I was standing at the back thinking: we'd have finished that past me in training.
"I'm more than thrilled to see us and many different goalscorers as well trying to get on the scoresheet.
"It's a quick changeover. We know that that Charlton isn't going to be an easy game and we've just got stick together again and move on to the next one."
