While Marc Skinner side are flying high at the top of the league, the Foxes are yet to register a point after four matches in 2022/23, ahead of welcoming the Red Devils to King Power Stadium (3pm BST kick-off). Here’s all the information you need to know prior to kick-off…
The Foxes camp
It was a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City for Lydia Bedford’s side last weekend, with goals from Khadija Shaw (2), Lauren Hemp and Yui Hasegawa at Academy Stadium. There are several ex-Manchester United players in the Foxes’ ranks, including injured forward Jess Sigsworth, while Abbie McManus and Natasha Flint could both come up against their former club. In other fitness news, Lydia Bedford revealed that goalkeeper Demi Lambourne is close to a return to action, and Hannah Cain is progressing well in her recovery from rupturing her ACL. Talking points
Manager Lydia Bedford told the media about the role the Blue Army can play on Sunday: “It will be a massive part of this weekend. The fans being behind the players and giving them that extra edge is going to be big. We want that noise in the stadium.”
Sam Tierney commented on the need for calmness in Thursday’s pre-match press conference: “You’ve got to stick to the process. We need to be defensively solid and resilient and be together. We’ve been working on being more confident in possession at this level.” The opposition
The Red Devils are yet to concede a goal in the WSL this term, beating both Reading and Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at home, with a 2-0 success away to West Ham United in between.
The only blot on their copybook was a penalty shootout defeat to Aston Villa in the Continental Tyres League Cup group stage after a 1-1 draw.
Lionesses’ stars Ella Toone, Alessia Russo and Mary Earps have all remained at the club for 2022/23, the former scoring twice and registered one assist in the opening three matches.
Summer signing Maya Le Tissier, formerly of Brighton, also has two goals and an assist to her name. Another EURO 2022 winner, Nikita Parris, joined from Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
In the dugout
At the end of his first season in charge, head coach Marc Skinner oversaw a third consecutive fourth-place finish in the WSL last term, continuing the work done by Casey Stoney.
Previously in charge of Birmingham City, from 2016 to 2019, he oversaw a run to the Women’s FA Cup Final, before spending time in the NWSL managing Orlando Pride.
Last time out
The last meeting between the sides at King Power Stadium was LCFC Women’s first home game in the WSL, and although McManus was on the scoresheet against her former side, it was United who came away with a 3-1 success, also winning the reverse fixture 4-0 in March.
Leicester did triumph in their Continental Tyres League Cup clash at Leigh Sports Village, however, drawing 2-2 thanks to goals from Sophie Howard and Flint, before winning on penalties. Lambourne decisively saved twice in the shootout. Ticket and coverage details
