Thanks to the backing of The Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Foundation and the generosity of our supporters, the matchday spotlight will shine on the babies who need us most and the incredible staff fighting for their futures, every single day.
At the heart of the appeal is a cutting-edge ultrasound scanner and 4D probe - technology that’s set to transform how care is delivered in the NICU and children’s heart centre.
“These are some of the most fragile patients in the hospital - tiny newborns, often premature, facing serious health challenges,” says Dr Greg Skinner, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at Leicester’s Hospitals.
“In those moments, having the right tools at the bedside can make all the difference.”
The new ultrasound scanner will offer quicker, clearer insights into a baby’s heart, using smart and AI-assisted technology to help doctors make confident, informed decisions when every second counts.
“For babies like Isabelle and Jack, born severely premature, being able to see exactly what’s going on inside the heart in real time helps us guide treatment more precisely.
“That accuracy doesn’t just help the medical team - it brings real reassurance to parents in what is often the most terrifying time of their lives,” Dr Skinner adds.
Alongside the scanner, the probe takes things a step further - providing a 4D, real-time view of a baby’s heart from inside the chest during surgery. Up until now, this kind of imaging was only possible in bigger children.
“It shows us exactly how the heart is working as we operate,” says Dr Skinner. “That means we can check repairs are doing what they’re supposed to do right there and then. It’s a massive step forward.”
For Dr Skinner, who has spent over 13 years supporting families in the NICU, the impact of this equipment goes beyond the clinical.
“Parents remember how they felt in those early, anxious days.
“Seeing us use the most advanced equipment available - it matters. It helps them believe their baby is in the very best hands.”
