Gary Rowett assesses our 1-1 draw with Millwall on Friday night
Harry Souttar scored for us before Macaulay Langstaff's leveller for the Lions
Having already been relegated, the Manager was frustrated to concede in added time
He did praise Souttar for his performance on a first LCFC outing since late October 2023 due to injury
Already relegated to Sky Bet League One, we hosted Alex Neil’s promotion-chasing Lions on Filbert Way, with Harry Souttar heading us in front in the 78th minute on his return from injury.
Macaulay Langstaff, though, levelled for the visitors in added time, which was a frustration for the Manager as the end of the 25/26 campaign nears.
“It’s disappointing the way it ended and that’s been symptomatic of some of the games, certainly since I’ve been here, and probably the season,” he said.
“I think, in the first half, it felt a bit like a game that didn’t mean quite as much to us as it did to Millwall, obviously going for second position.
“There wasn’t a lot in it, but it just felt like they ran with just a little bit more edge than us.
“We had some reasonable moments but again couldn’t quite make the most of it and then we tweaked a few things at half-time.
“We changed a few things, got a few of the young lads on, I thought they gave us good energy. I thought Soutts deserved a goal.
“He was absolutely outstanding all evening. I think it’s probably something we’ve missed as a team, someone who really wants to go and put his head on the ball in both boxes.
“We spoke about the importance of both boxes and where we’ve lacked a little bit, so it’s nice to see. I gave him his full debut so I know what he’s all about, but it’s nice to get the fans to see a little favour of that.
“I thought he was outstanding. To not play for 400-odd days and then go on to play 90 minutes, that’s some shift.
“I’m pleased with that. I’m disappointed with the goal we conceded at the end, but I suppose, relatively pleased that we made a game of it. Potentially I was a little bit concerned that we might just roll over and not really show the relevant fight.
“In the second half against Hull and the second half tonight, we showed a little bit more fight when we had to. We’ve spoken about that.
“Of course, that should have been there all season. Of course, that should have been heightened perhaps before the last two games but, again, I can only judge that period.
“I’m not going to sit here and eulogise about the performance because I think it was just okay. But we got into some good areas.
“We probably created the least we’ve created in the last six or seven games but we don’t concede silly goals, apart from in the 90th minute, when it looks like maybe we’re going to get three points.”
We end the campaign away at Blackburn Rovers next Saturday and Rowett said it may be an opportunity for players to get minutes in the tank who haven’t featured as often as others over recent weeks.
“The fact we’ve got eight days before that game, we’ll mix up the week,” he added. “I’ve said that from day one, we have to be professional. That’s our job.
“I think the game might be slightly different to tonight. I wouldn’t expect the intensity that was there this evening but it’ll be an opportunity for some players to get some minutes.
“We saw Louis [Page] tonight. We wanted to try and get Louis, Jez (Jeremy Monga), Bade [Aluko] into this game. For next week, that’s another consideration.”
